Zuko – Passion EP

January 30, 2014 in Singles

Zuko Passion EP 5 And DimeAnd speaking of proper deep house, seems like a while since we heard from Denver’s 5 And Dime, but they make a very welcome return tonight with this EP from fellow Denverite Zuko.

In its Original form, Passion is actually quite a driving, techy groove with vaguely Italo-sounding synths on top… the hype sheet compares it to Circulation material of yore and I’d say that wasn’t unjustified. But it’s actually the remixes that I’m feeling more personally, as Kaua takes a much more sultry deep house tone while Deeplogic brings the drums further to the fore to create a blissed-out end-of-nighter for weary afterhours floors.

Kaua’s mix takes the gold here for me but the other two will have their time/place too!

Mane Savanovic – Turn Back Time EP

January 25, 2014 in Singles

Mane Savanovic Turn Back Time EP Deep Site RecordingsGonna keep it on a deep house tip tonight, starting with this latest from Croatia’s Deep Site Recordings. Mane Savanovic is a new name to me, but Deep Site can pretty much always be relied on to deliver the goods and when you factor in Al Bradley and Rishi K on remix duties, this starts to look like something of a no-brainer!

Sounds like one, too. In its original form, Turn Back Time is a late-night, dreamy affair with sweet-as-sugar, vaguely UKG-ish fem vox and densely layered synths that zoom across the room from one speaker to another. Al Bradley’s 3am Deep Dub does what Al’s 3am Deep Dubs always do, transforming the cut into a heads-down afterhours workout, while Rishi’s melodic pass could take it to proggier floors and Zuko’s rub (another new name) ventures into glitchier, techier territory.

Despite the remix talent on display though, it’s the original that works best for me here. Just lovely.

Kaua – Free Flow EP

September 26, 2013 in Singles

Kaua Free Flow EP 5 And DimeSeems like a little while since Denver’s 5 And Dime made an appearance on TIWWD, but here they are again with some typically fine deep house grooves, coming in this instance from Japanese producer Kaua.

There are two original tracks, plus remixes of each from Stefan Cordery and Zuko. The title cut is, in its original form, a floor-friendly yet still pretty dreamy and laidback affair driven by warm keys, shakers and female vocal snips, while Cordery’s mix is a tad more percussive and Zuko’s features some extra tinkling keys of his own. It’s a similar story on B-side Sinking Slowly, a deep n’ dubby late night cut to start out with, Cordery again beefing up the drums and Zuko again paring things back and then adding some Yellow Magic Orchestra-ish vibes/zylophone/whatever that sound is.

Truth be told both tracks and all six mixes are essentially just variations on a theme – but that just means that if you’re a 5 And Dime fan you should be more than happy with all of ’em.
