Greenfish – Early Birds

November 1, 2014 in Singles

Greenfish Early Birds UM RecordsSome typically classy deep house grooves from UM Records to kick us off tonight.

In its original form, Early Birds is a laidback, dubby groover with a sub-aquatic, opium den kinda feel. The Phasen Remix beefs up the drums for the dancefloor somewhat and brings the funky guitar licks a little more the fore, while Yigit Atilla strips out the atmospherics and leaves us with a very late night, headnoddin’ pass centred on the lazily rolling beats and barely-there vocal fragments. Rounding out the EP is Late Night Caffee [sic], which is just a BPM or two pacier than the title cut but has a similarly languid, drifty feel overall, and some killer sci-fi/space disco stabs to boot.

Top quality stuff, but then we expect no less from UM!

Yigit Atilla – Cornerstone

August 29, 2014 in Singles

Yigit Atilla Cornerstone UM RecordsWe end tonight back in more familiar deep house territory, with this latest from the ever on-point UM Records.

In its Original form, Cornerstone is a midtempo chugger with a spoken vocal eulogising the unifying powers of house music – “We made our space and found our freedom/we lined the streets and danced like children/we made our place and shared our home/house in our hearts, our cornerstone”. The Meloder Remix is a bit ‘busier’ and more dramatic, with swirling synths, hefty bass and robotic vox, while TIWWD’s old buddy Tim Andresen serves up a drummier, terrace-friendly refix. Rounding out the EP is Colours And Textures, a more dubby, late-night affair with treated soulful vox and some lovely garage-y organ stabs.

The latter cut would actually be my pick, if pushed, but to be fair the whole EP’s pretty damn good.

Bourne – Fake Illusions EP

June 21, 2014 in Singles

Bourne Fake Illusions EP Ready Mix RecordsHeading into deeper pastures now with this three-track, six-mix EP from Bourne on the ever-checkable Ready Mix Records.

Fake Illusions itself is supplied in two mixes, the squelchy Original with its vague hints of Latin disco, and a far deeper (and to these ears far more satisfying) rub from Yigit Atilla. Eyes Wide Open is a slower, more abstract/near-ambient piece supplied in just the one mix. The real treat there though is After A Rainy Night. The original sits somewhere between cosmic disco and the deepest of progressive house, label boss BiG AL’s refix moves us more firmly into house territory, but the standout of the whole EP is the BD Tom Remix – proper late-night driftaway bliss.

All told, then, there’s a bit of a mix of styles but for the deep house connoisseurs, it’s Atilla’s mix of Fake Illusions and BD Tom’s take on …Rainy Night that make this unmissable.

Various – Numusic Vol 3

April 13, 2014 in Singles

Numusic Vol 3 UM RecordsNext up we have this six-track sampler from the ever-dependable UM Records.

Yigit Atilla’s No Excuses is an object lesson in how to do dubbed-out deep house properly. Tidy Daps’ The Lie plays with classic Chi-Town deep house tropes, overlaying sumptuous piano and spoken vocal samples, while Olej & Stereoteric’s End Of March (presented here in Toxez Remix form) is a laidback n’ lazy late night gem. ReadyMix boss Big AL gives us Grace which is aimed straight at weary 5am floors, its drifting synth washes and barely-there snatches of vocal underpinned throughout by rock solid drums, before Da Funk (of Acryl Music fame) comes with Soul Knights, a more funktified, warm-up kinda cut, and then finally Dilby’s Starting Over is one for truly locked-on dancefloors to lose themselves in.

Big AL and Yigit Atilla vie for top honours if pushed, but really this is excellent stuff all round… from a label from whom we expect nothing less!
