Rishi K – Strange & Beautiful

January 31, 2016 in Singles

Rishi K Strange & Beautiful Sonic Soul RecordsThe witching hour approacheth, so this is the last review for tonight… and what a way to finish. If Rishi K with Tom Lown, Ariane Blank and Jero Nougues remixes doesn’t get your juices flowing, you’re clearly reading this blog by mistake!

Rishi’s original version of Strange & Beautiful, then, is a fairly mellow but still floor-friendly deep house groover, with vocoded “funky music!” vocal stabs, “come on!” interjections, synths redolent of Joey Negro at his most spacey and a warm, chugging bassline that underpins it all. Shoes, Bags & Boys boss Blank brings us a stripped-back, dubbier, twitchier rub that foregrounds some Afro-tinged percussion, Jero’s rub essentially follows the Original’s blueprint but dials back the vox, while Tom Lown takes us into proper late-night territory with added yearnsome female vocal wails and synths that flutter their way to Andromeda and back.

Classy stuff all round, but then from a line-up like that, what did you expect?

Kiano & Below Bangkok – Deep Thoughts [Remixed]

November 1, 2015 in Albums

Kiano & Below Bangkok Deep Thoughts Remixed Ready Mix RecordsTracks from the Croatian duo’s 2014 artist album get remixed by a host of respected deep house producers here, with predictably fine results!

It should be pointed out that this isn’t a ‘remix album’ as such, in the sense that they haven’t taken all of the original album’s 16 tracks, and had each one remixed. Rather, these are the other mixes you’d have gotten hold of had you purchased all four singles from the album – namely Love & Happiness (with remixes from Tom Lown and Pano Manara), Rolling (Bourne, Nico Mendez, Cosmic Cowboys), 49 Steps (Tamandua Twist, Savvas) and In The Heat Of The Night (Ilias Katelanos, Distant Relatives JHB). But just look at that line-up. If you’re a lover of proper underground deep house you’ll be salivating already… I can only add that you’re quite right to do so so!

An unmissable selection of sumptuous deep grooves, with cuts for the floor, cuts for the headphones and not a duff mix in sight.

Pop Out And Play – Spray Crazy

August 30, 2015 in Singles

Pop Out And Play Spray Crazy EP Lucky Sun RecordingsFirst out on 2014 on the late lamented 5 And Dime, this deep house nugget from Simon Tappenden and Wil Russell, AKA Pop Out And Play, gets a re-release with new mixes courtesy of Tom Lown’s Lucky Sun Recordings.

The original’s quite a lively affair by deep house standards, with a shimmery, Balearic disco kinda feel, while Mr Lown’s own remix  is a deeper variation on the same theme. Harold Heath’s remix opens with old skool Chi-town drums and gradually works its way up into a deep, acid-tinged bubbler, but the standout for yours truly is Mark Slee’s Deep Feelings Dub – a warm, meandering slice of driftaway late-night deep house par excellence.

Kiano & Below Bangkok – Love & Happiness

July 5, 2015 in Singles

Kiano & Below Bangkok Love & Happiness Ready Mix RecordsAaaaand finally for tonight… some deeply chilled house vibes courtesy of Ready Mix Records.

In its Original form, Love & Happiness is a midtempo, almost bordering on slo-mo cut with muted kicks, beautifully atmospheric chords and no burning desire to ‘do’ very much at all. Pano Manara supplies a more floor-friendly refix, with the drums brought a little further forward and a little more action in the keys department, while Tom Lown heads in the opposite direction on his languid Looking For The Sun Dub. Finally, the lazy, trippy, slightly early-Orb-ish Chill Mix will cater for those in search of downtempo satisfactio; it’s also the only mix to feature a vocal, which has some American guy talking about the different meanings of the word ‘love’.

Quality stuff as ever from Ready Mix… and a suitably mellow end to a busy Sunday night’s blogging.

Sen-Sei & Dano – Dig Deep (That Look)

May 17, 2015 in Singles

Sen-Sei & Dano Dig Deep Delve Deeper RecordingsFour varied mixes to choose from on this offering from brand new Sheffield label Delve Deeper Recordings.

In its Original form, Dig Deep (That Look) is a chunky-but-dreamy deep houser with choppy guitars, atmospheric synth washes and a treated female “I see that look in your eyes” vocal. As for the rerubs, the label may be new but they’ve managed to pull together a mightily impressive remix line-up! Jay Tripwire gives us a techier, trippier and more uptempo reworking, Tomson’s Diggin’ In NY Mix is fairly self-explanatory, paying homage to vintage New York house stylings, but the pick of the bunch for me is a deep n’ dubby refix from Tom Lown that’s aimed straight at weary 5am dancefloors.

As debuts go, this one can be safely filed under ‘proper stunning’. More soon please, Steel City peeps!

Jero Nougues – The Traveler EP

April 12, 2014 in Singles

Jero Nougues The Traveler 5 And DimeTwo tracks in a total of five mixes make up this latest EP from Denver-based 5 And Dime Recordings.

Argentina’s Jero Nougues is the man at the controls. His first original, In My Mind, is a laidback deep house groove with a spoken male “let me tell you why you’re here” vocal atop lush, lazy keys. Fellow Argentinian Nacho Riveros’s remix is quite similar, but has slightly tuffer drums and some wibbly synths that’d make this the pick for afterhours play, while Tom Lown’s rub is the deepest and most stripped-back of the three. Nougues’ other original is 2am, again a fairly mellow cut that chugs along nicely accompanied by crowd noise and whooshy synths, while finally the Portofino Sunrise mix of the same is an even more mellow variation on the same theme.

Nice gentle vibes all round, but it’s Tom’s rub of In My Mind that takes the gold for me here.

Distant Relatives JHB – Oceanfront

April 2, 2014 in Singles

Distant Relatives JHB Oceanfront DeepWit RecordingsHaving first impressed with a release on Something Different, South African deep house duo Distant Relatives JHB come to Denmark’s DeepWit with this two-track, four-mix EP.

Oceanfront itself, in its original form, is an unhurried, contemplative instrumental piece, albeit said contemplation is underpinned by fairly tuff kicks throughout. Tom Lown’s remix of the same beefs up the drums even more and adds some dramatic synth sweeps and spoken vocal samples, making this the more likely bet for dancefloor play, though we’re still talking weary 5am floors even then. The other original cut, Deepest Love, operates in similar territory but with percussion that tends more to the rhythmic and flowing than the straight-up pounding, if you see what I mean, and sports more sampled speech by way of a vocal, while finally Gareth Billaney’s remix ups the dancefloor ante with insistent rattling percussion and some wibbly-wobbly synth action.

The original of Deepest Love JUST pips it for me but between the four, any DJ playing actual deep house should find something here.

Tomas Malo – Running On Fumes

November 8, 2013 in Singles

Tomas Malo Running On Fumes Deep8Some fine mixes to choose from on this latest from London’s Deep8.

Don’t get me wrong, the original mix of Running On Fumes – all protracted organ chords, looping treated male vox and steadily rolling percussion – is plenty playable. But it’s the deeper rerubs from Jazzloungerz, Tom Lown and Jamie Haus that do it best for yours truly… though I suspect the Soul Conspiracy rub, with its big-room retro M1 groove, may prove the most zeitgeist-y of the lot.

Put it this way though, with five solid mixes on offer there’s almost certainly going to be something most deep house jocks will be feeling.

Harold Heath & Tom Lown – Our Love EP

June 28, 2013 in Singles

Harold Heath & Tom Lown Our Love EP Savoir Faire MusiqueAfter all that techy bizniss yesterday, let’s get Friday started back inna deep house groove with this typically fine offering from Savoir Faire Musique.

Though jointly credited, its actually a split EP, with messrs Heath and Lown each contributing one track and then remixing the other’s. Heath’s original is Our Love, a chunky, chuggy number driven along by a nice fat squelchy bassline with lots of fluttering synths and FX on top; Tom Lown’s remix then takes us into dreamier, more late-night territory. Lown’s original contribution meanwhile is Sometimes, a blissed-out, dancing-as-the-sun rises kind of affair, to which Heath then adds some extra bottom-end crunch.

Featuring two heavyweights of the UK deep house scene, both on top form, this is a no-brainer really…

Tom Lown – Manuka

February 20, 2013 in Singles

Tom Lown Manuka UM RecordsTom Lown, who should be familiar to TIWWD readers from releases on Lost My Dog, DeepWit and 3am Recordings, makes his debut for UM Records.

As we’ve come to expect from UM Records and sister label Untitled Music, high-quality deep house in the classic vein is the order of the day here, with two mixes of Manuka and two of Too Loose. Both trax are probably best suited to warm-up or afterhours rather than peaktime play, whether you go for the originals or the Jon Billick/Santiago Santamaria (respectively) remixes; beyond that, I haven’t got HUGE amounts to say, other than that the dub-inflected original of Too Loose is the one I personally would reach for first.

But like I said, the quality standard’s high throughout, and if you’re feenin’ for some PROPER deep house as opposed to all that hipster-friendly deep/tech shizzle, this is one you’ll definitely want to check.
