Jose Vizcaino – Ear Snack

December 17, 2013 in Singles

Jose Vizcaino Ear Snack Kinetic GrooveIn which the San Francisco-based producer serves up some fine deep house grooves for London label Kinetic Grooves, who I believe are making their TIWWD debut with this.

Four mixes of Ear Snack to choose from. The original rides tuff, techy kicks, augmented by atmospheric keys, spooky FX and disembodied vocal snips. As for the three remixes, all I’m gonna say is that Andy Slate, Stefan Cordery and Niels Freidel pretty much seem to be playing a game of “who can go the deepest”… with Freidel just nudging it.

They could have called this Ear Treat, and I for one wouldn’t be arguing. Proper deep grooves for da proper heads!

Kaua – Free Flow EP

September 26, 2013 in Singles

Kaua Free Flow EP 5 And DimeSeems like a little while since Denver’s 5 And Dime made an appearance on TIWWD, but here they are again with some typically fine deep house grooves, coming in this instance from Japanese producer Kaua.

There are two original tracks, plus remixes of each from Stefan Cordery and Zuko. The title cut is, in its original form, a floor-friendly yet still pretty dreamy and laidback affair driven by warm keys, shakers and female vocal snips, while Cordery’s mix is a tad more percussive and Zuko’s features some extra tinkling keys of his own. It’s a similar story on B-side Sinking Slowly, a deep n’ dubby late night cut to start out with, Cordery again beefing up the drums and Zuko again paring things back and then adding some Yellow Magic Orchestra-ish vibes/zylophone/whatever that sound is.

Truth be told both tracks and all six mixes are essentially just variations on a theme – but that just means that if you’re a 5 And Dime fan you should be more than happy with all of ’em.

Stefan Cordery – Incorporated

December 16, 2012 in Singles

Stefan Cordery Incorporated Menomale MusicThis WAS gonna go in the ‘So many tunes…’ round-up, but the four mixes are just too different, and too good in their own ways, for it not to get a full review.

Stefan Cordery is the man at the helm: his original version of Incorporated is an atmospheric tech-house chugger with that minimal-style trick of layering lots of scratchy, high-end sounds. Carlo Galliani’s rub adds some stripped-down bass throb and brain-frying disco stabs for the 3am strobelit floors, while Ken Rok strips things right back to a minimal/deep techno pulse. And I’m liking all three mixes to be fair, especially Galliani’s.

But it’s the no-nonsense Mario Conte & Fabio SPZZ1 rub I’m loving best: it’s the kind of muscular disco-techno that makes me think of Vague or early-doors Trade back in the day. Shirts optional.
