Subalpine – Outlook EP

January 24, 2016 in Singles

Subalpine Outlook EP Spring Tube LiquidA change of pace now, but not a massive change in mood particularly, with this latest from Spring Tube’s excellent Spring Tube Liquid offshoot.

On the A, Outlook itself is a dreamy but driving liquid D&B roller with pads that just don’t stop, lush piano chords and cut-up soulful vox. Flip it over and you’ll find Those Who Wait, which draws on a similar sound palette but, while slightly more uptempo in the beats department, has a more delicate, almost minimal feel overall, with the piano doing most of the work augmented by some mournful trumpet action.

Both are cool but the title track just nudges it for me.

Anthony Mea – Landscape

Anthony Mea Landscape EP Haute Musique

Let’s end tonight with the latest from Anthony Mea, fresh from his D&B excursions on Spring Tube Liquid and back in the deep house groove on BiG AL’s Haute Musique imprint.

In its original form, Landcsapeis a sumptuous, soul-tinged late-nighter with pads that just don’t stop and a looping female “glad it’s taught ya” (?) vocal. Evgeny’s Midnight Dub shouldn’t really need too much explaining, but just in case is a sparser, mellower pass bordering on downtempo territory, while finally Pano Manara’s Tribute Mix is another deeper rub but featuring the vocal this time.

Very classy stuff indeed, but then for Haute Musique that’s pretty much par for the course. Ditto Mr Mea, come to that!

Out: This week on Beatport, everywhere else from 13 July

Alexei Scutari – Come To Me

June 19, 2015 in Singles

Alexei Scutari Come To Me Spring Tube LiquidTo end on tonight, let’s take a trip into liquid D&B pastures in the company of Moldovan producer Alexei Scutari.

Come To Me itself starts with a heavily filtered intro before emerging as a heady concoction of rolling jungle beats, lush pads and slightly 80s-sounding synths. Nikolay Mikryukov then comes with a beatless chilled refix, but the standout for me here is actually the bonus cut Carpi, a lively little stepper laden with luxuriant synth strings and frantic Detroitian piano.

The first two are cool but as I said, it’s Carpi that’s the must-have.

Anthony Mea – Ashes Love EP

May 21, 2015 in Singles

Anthony Mea Ashes Love Sring Tube LiquidLast one for tonight, and it’s from another exciting new label, as Spring Tube – purveyors of all manner of fine deep house/techno/prog goodness – launch sub-label Spring Tube Liquid, concentrating on, as the name suggests, deep, liquid D&B.

Anthony Mea’s the man chosen to lead the charge. No stranger to this blog, having featured many times with his deep house releases, here he embraces his inner junglist with three very fine laidback, jazzy cuts – two of which (I Need You Know and Miss Your Love) you may recall featured on his second album, Border, as reviewed on TIWWD back in September. Suffice to say those two sound just as good when sent out into the world in single form, while the title cut – all steppy beats, bass you want to bathe in and trip-hop-ish fem vox – lives up to its prime billing perfectly.

A superb EP all round, then, and a great label debut. More, please!
