Janet Rushmore – Joy [Sonny Fodera Remixes]

September 30, 2015 in Singles

Janet Rushmore Joy Soul HeavenHere’s one that’ll sort the men from the boys (or the women from the girls), because to younger readers this track might not mean much but for those of us a little more, ahem, ‘time-served’, Joy is a tune that brings back many a happy memory. So much so, that you’d think perhaps getting it remixed wasn’t such a great idea.

Thankfully though, Soul Heaven have called on the very capable Mr Fodera and he proves himself more than up to the job. On the A, his Deep Mix is basically a more polished update of the 1994 original – faithful but with today’s smoother production values, which should make it easier to programme. It’s the Sonny Fodera Beatdown Mix on the B that’s the killer, though. This, too, starts out pretty faithful to the original, albeit with slightly tuffer drums… then at around the 1:40, in from out of nowhere flies a positively RUDE squelch bassline and we’re left in no doubt that, yes, this is definitely 2015 after all.

The word ‘triumph’ might be slight overkill here… then again, it might not! An essential purchase either way.

Miguel Migs ft Meshell Ndegeocello – What You Do Want

January 22, 2015 in Singles

Miguel Migs What Do You Want Soul HeavenA treat for the soulful heads to kick off with tonight, as the heavyweight team-up of Migs and legendary neo-soul/hiphop/jazz vocalist Meshell Ndegeocello serve up this track culled from Migs’ recent Dim Division album.

In its Original form, What Do You Want is classic Migs-style deep, soulful house, very much along the lines of his many previous collabs with Lisa Shaw and Aya. Migs’ own Salted Vocal beefs up the beats for the dancefloor, adding a nagging old-skool piano riff and some killer space disco stabs for good measure. Rodriguez Jr then supplies a brace of refixes: a Remix that downpitches part of the vocal and adds some heavy, menacing bass growl, and a bleepy, techy, pared-back Dub.

Migs’ Salted Vocal takes the gold for me, though.

DJ Able feat Donald Sheffey – Watcha Gonna Do

April 21, 2014 in Singles

DJ Able Watcha Gonna Do Soul Heaven RecordsThe second TIWWD showing of the week from the Defected stable… this time it’s the turn of the Soul Heaven imprint and Rinse FM regular DJ Able.

In its original form, Watcha Gonna Do is an energetic soulful houser powered along by warbling piano chords and topped by a full male vocal from Donald Sheffey. It’s accompanied simply by a Dub, which is essentially an instrumental pass except for chopped-up snippets of the chorus.

Fusing classic soulful house vibes with fresh, contemporary-sounding production, this is one the real garage lovers won’t want to miss.

Sonny Fodera feat Amber Jolene – Hold It Down

November 16, 2013 in Singles

Sonny Fodera Hold It Down Soul HeavenNothing to do with the 4hero/Lady Alma track of the same name, what we have here is a certified big room vocal house anthem, as Amber Jolene’s sultry vocal and This Year’s Bass Sound do battle atop crisp, driving beats.

Cause & Affect tech it up somewhat on their remix, but the Original’s the one here. Just add big speakers.
