Sunday night deepness

April 17, 2016 in Singles

Hello! You might remember me, I used to have a house blog. If you’re wondering where TIWWD has been this last month, all will be explained on Facebook (albeit possibly tomorrow). But anyway, long story short, am back on the reviews case now, kicking off tonight with a selection of SERIOUSLY deep goodness from the last seven days…

Johannes Different Things Deep ClicksJohannes – Difficult Things EP
Getting a full release this week is (was) this three-tracker from Czech newcomer Johannes, coming on Spanish label Deep Clicks. Difficult Things itself is an unhurried, dreamy and soul-tinged deep houser built with afterhours or post-club play in mind. Don’t Make Me Wait is a smoother, deep garage-y affair that nods to the Peech Boys, while finally Don’t You Wanna is another 4am deep house cut with warm, dubby bass and breathy female vocal snips. All three are quality but if pushed, Don’t Make Me Wait stands out.

Filta Freqz Way 2 Go Soul Supplement RecordsFilta Freqz – Way 2 Go EP
Slightly more uptempo and floor-friendly deep house vibes here courtesy of Vegas’s finest, Soul Supplement Records. Just the two tracks on offer: Way 2 Go itself rocks tuff kicks, cut-up/filtered disco vox and a hefty dose of garage swing, while Take Note on the flip is similarly disco-fied but with rolling beats, parping sax and assorted fragments of male vocal (“come on,” “to the beat y’all… and ya don’t stop” and “who got it going on?” all appear at different times). The title track just nudges it for me.

Gregory Dub Get Deeper EP Gents N' Dandy'sGregory Dub – Get Deeper EP
An outstanding five-track EP here from the ever-checkable Gents N’ Dandy’s. The smooth, Jersey-ish deep garage vibes of Home Is Home get the ball rolling, Floating continues in a similar vein, Come On hits that perfect “deep enough for the sofa, tuff enough for the floor” sweet spot, Dreamin’ takes us into proper blissed-out, 5am territory and then finally Relief plays us out on a lazy, downtempo note. And, as we’ve come to expect from Gn’D, it’s superbly classy stuff from start to finish. Go seek!

Carlos Francisco Sun Chaser SP RecordingsCarlos Francisco – Sun Chaser
And speaking of supremely classy stuff, here’s a jazz-inflected offering from SP Recordings that’s definitely one “for the heads” as they say! Building from a simple percussive intro, Sun Chaser slowly develops into as wigged-out and groovesome a jazzual, garage-y Rhodes workout as you’ll hear all month, while an accompanying Afro Dream Mix is the same but with Afro/tribal beats (well duh). Which mix you opt for is a matter of personal percussive preference: either will have 90 per cent of the population going ‘What’s this, fucking Jazz Club?” – and the 10 per cent that matter in raptures!

Miami 2016 Sampler Ready Mix RecordsVarious – Ready Mix WMC 2016
Yes, it seems a little late in the day for Miami samplers but this only got a full release this week. Regular readers of this blog (if there are any left after the recent hiatus!) will know I’m a big fan of Ready Mix Records’ take on deep house and this nine-track collection doesn’t change that one iota. Not doing the full track-by-track but suffice to say that there are nine tracks from eight artists, all new names to your truly but Ready Mix’s usual high quality standards apply, with Beat Factory’s bouncy I Feel Like, Eke’s funky-assed Romb and Armen Miran’s moody Marta particularly worth checking.

Klartraum E Remixes Pt 1 LucidflowKlartraum – E Remixes Pt 1
Sunday night at TIWWD wouldn’t be Sunday night at TIWWD without some deep, dubby techno from Lucidflow to end on! So here we have five remixes of three tracks from last year’s E album by label bosses Klartraum. Bell Birds Dub gets the most love, with D. Diggler and Yapacc remixes as well as the original all featured; TBH the Original is still my fave but if you want it toughened up Diggler’s yer man while Yapacc gets a bit more abstract and soundscape-y. Elsewhere, Alan Oldham AKA Detroitrocketscience brings us a shuffly, minimal-leaning take on Bill Bill, while Oscar Barila and Jamin Hernandez’s rub of Drama Queen is lazy, sunkissed deep house of the highest calibre.

Greenfish – Pouse Harty

December 29, 2015 in Singles

Greenfish Pouse Harty Ready Mix RecordsDoing my best to get back into ‘work’ mode after the Xmas break but it’s not easy! So there are still a few bits from last week I need to tell y’all about, starting with this latest offering from Ready Mix Records.

Four mixes of Pouse Harty to choose from. The original’s quite a stripped-back, almost minimal deep/tech houser predicated around a simple hip-shaking rhythm, bubblin’ bass and diva vocal snips, all of which are accompanied by a treated male voice saying – well, actually I’m pretty sure he’s not saying the name of Scottish football team Stenhousemuir, but now I’ve heard it as that…

As for the remixes, David Kassi takes us down a deeper, warmer, smoother road with a beefier bassline and some nice understated chords, Deep Active Sound get dubbed-out and a lil’ bit wonky for small hours floors, while finally SLP up the dub ante (in the reggae sense) on their skankin’ Club Mix.

Kassi’s rub takes the gold for me, with SLP not far behind.

Out: Now on Beatport, everywhere else from Monday

Kiano & Below Bangkok – Deep Thoughts [Remixed]

November 1, 2015 in Albums

Kiano & Below Bangkok Deep Thoughts Remixed Ready Mix RecordsTracks from the Croatian duo’s 2014 artist album get remixed by a host of respected deep house producers here, with predictably fine results!

It should be pointed out that this isn’t a ‘remix album’ as such, in the sense that they haven’t taken all of the original album’s 16 tracks, and had each one remixed. Rather, these are the other mixes you’d have gotten hold of had you purchased all four singles from the album – namely Love & Happiness (with remixes from Tom Lown and Pano Manara), Rolling (Bourne, Nico Mendez, Cosmic Cowboys), 49 Steps (Tamandua Twist, Savvas) and In The Heat Of The Night (Ilias Katelanos, Distant Relatives JHB). But just look at that line-up. If you’re a lover of proper underground deep house you’ll be salivating already… I can only add that you’re quite right to do so so!

An unmissable selection of sumptuous deep grooves, with cuts for the floor, cuts for the headphones and not a duff mix in sight.

Out: This week (on general release)

Yigit Atilla – Neverending

October 25, 2015 in Singles

Yigit Atilla Neverending Ready Mix RecordsSeeing as it’s Sunday night, let’s end on a deeper tip in the company of that ever-reliable provider of deep house goodness, Yigit Atilla.

There are three mixes of Neverending to choose from. In its Original form, it’s a sumptuous, lightly prog-tinged instrumental with nice warm, solid kicks, nagging Rhodes and a blissed-out, end-of-night/sofa surfing feel overall.  The Greenfish Remix is much more stripped-down and dubby, while Spanish producer Hraach brings us a remix also opts for a dub bassline but retains the smooth, mellifluous feel of the original.

In fact, it’s Hraach’s rub that for me is the standout of an admittedly fine set all round.

Out: This week on Beatport, everywhere else from 2 November.

About: This is brought to you by Ready Mix Records, who as ever can be found on Soundcloud and Facebook.

Pano Manara – Hommage An Karl

October 17, 2015 in Singles

Paco Manara Hommage An Karl Ready Mix RecordsSome superb deep n’ dreamy house vibes here courtesy of those ever-reliable providers of the same, Canada’s Ready Mix Records.

Three mixes of Hommage An Karl to choose from. In its Original form, it’s an uncompromisingly deep, dubby chugger topped with a strange spoken male vocal that our old friend Google informs me is a quote from Charles Bukowski’s Factotum. Things then get a little more trippy and acidic as the track progresses. The BDTom Remix pulls off the unlikely feat of heading down an even deeper, dubbier path, but they’ve saved the best till last, cos the spacey, late-night Analog Trip Remix, with its added fem vocal snips and head-gone-astray synth squiggles, is an absolute triumph.

Out: This week on Beatport, everywhere else from 29 October.

Portofino Sunrise – Variable Geometry EP

September 12, 2015 in Singles

Portofino Sunrise Variable Geometry EP Ready Mix RecordsSome seriously deep house grooves on this three-track EP from rising Italian producer Portofino Sunrise and Canada’s Ready Mix Records.

Zero Support is up first, a dreamy, midtempo affair built for warm-up or post-club play, with pads a-go-go and, in the pulsing synth chords, a nod to vintage Italo house circa 1988-92. Variable Geometry itself follows, which is a tad more upbeat/floor-friendly but still pretty darned deep n’ sumptuous, while completing the EP is Purple, which really ain’t nothin’ but a chunky late-night groove, topped with occasional soulful  male vocal snips and designed to assist your state-transformation as you slowly melt and become one with the sofa…

Excellent stuff as ever from Ready Mix, and a must-check for those that like it ‘proper deep’.

Out: This week on Beatport, everywhere else from 21 September

G-Spice – The Pressure

July 30, 2015 in Singles

G-Space The Pressure Ready Mix RecordsMoving into deep house territory now with this latest from Canada’s ever-reliable Ready Mix Records.

In its Original form, The Pressure is a midpaced affair with shuffling beats, a Chi-town bassline and a muted male “I can’t take the pressure” vocal, all complemented by dramatic, space-y synth sweeps. It comes accompanied by three remixes: Soul Academy strip out some of the atmospherics and go for a more lolloping, dubby feel, Spennu beefs up the beats just slightly and adds some melancholy, minor key piano, while Tamandua Twist injects just a lil’ more funk and bounce, as well as a hint of acid towards the end.

Not a duff mix in sight, but Soul Academy take the gold if pushed.

Out: This week on Beatport, everywhere else from 10 August

Moe Turk – Jam

July 19, 2015 in Singles

Moe Turk Jam Ready Mix RecordsPredictably classy deep house grooves on this latest from BiG AL’s Ready Mix Records.

In its Original form, Jam is a hypnotic, laidback throbber, with jazzy keys in places and a man’s voice saying “jam” periodically throughout. The Jarquin & Cano Remix opts for more floor-friendly percussion and a rolling bassline, and has less of the atmospherics, while the Spennu Remix is again more stripped back, but takes us into late-night territory where those jazzy, garage-y keys really shine through.

If you held a gun to my head I think Spennu’s rub just nudges it for me… but it’s a close-run thing and, to be honest, I’d really rather you didn’t.

Out: This week (on general release)

Kiano & Below Bangkok – Love & Happiness

July 5, 2015 in Singles

Kiano & Below Bangkok Love & Happiness Ready Mix RecordsAaaaand finally for tonight… some deeply chilled house vibes courtesy of Ready Mix Records.

In its Original form, Love & Happiness is a midtempo, almost bordering on slo-mo cut with muted kicks, beautifully atmospheric chords and no burning desire to ‘do’ very much at all. Pano Manara supplies a more floor-friendly refix, with the drums brought a little further forward and a little more action in the keys department, while Tom Lown heads in the opposite direction on his languid Looking For The Sun Dub. Finally, the lazy, trippy, slightly early-Orb-ish Chill Mix will cater for those in search of downtempo satisfactio; it’s also the only mix to feature a vocal, which has some American guy talking about the different meanings of the word ‘love’.

Quality stuff as ever from Ready Mix… and a suitably mellow end to a busy Sunday night’s blogging.

Out: This week (on general release)

Savvas – Running Out Of My Heart

June 4, 2015 in Singles

Savvas Running Out Of My Mind Ready Mix RecordsTo start us off tonight, some typically high-quality deep house vibes from Canada’s Ready Mix Records.

Five mixes of Running Out Of My Heart to choose from. The original’s a pulsing midtempo affair with a soulful male “running just as fast as you can” vocal and a Balearic-ish feel overall. Anthony Mea tuffens up the drums and uses the vocal more sparingly, on a mix built with weary 4am dancefloors in mind*. Forteba’s rub is a little more lilting, with shuffly drums, and as such should find favour with those on a “deep and soulful” tip, Pion’s operates in that deep/progressive hinterland and finally Yigit Atilla takes us into proper amniotic, late-night territory.

The Mea rub is working best for me but our old friend Yigit’s not far behind.

Out: This week (on general release)

About: You can find Ready Mix on Soundcloud and Facebook.

* I say that, but obviously I have no idea what Mr Mea had in mind when he was making it. He was mostly thinking about tractors and Hershey bars, for all I know. But you know what I mean.
