Pozzi – Prime Suspect

April 20, 2014 in Singles

Pozzi Prime Suspect NightChild RecordsSouth African house wizards Pozzi take a trip into the deepest of tech territories on this five-track EP for New York’s NightChild Records.

I’m Trapped In Deep Shit sets the tone, its sparse, Detroitian deep techno grooves overlaid with vinyl crackle. Prime Suspect Dub is up next, a track with the emphasis firmly on the ‘dub’, while Midnight Drips is languid, minimalist fare; Ocean Voices is then a near-ambient, downtempo cut before finally Detroit Madness reprises the same kinda mood as the opener.

Five fine, head-friendly cuts best served on a sofa accompanied by your herbal cigarette of choice. I expect.

Out: This week on Beatport, everywhere else from 16 May.

Jonny Bee – Nobody Like You

July 28, 2013 in Singles

Jonny Bee Nobody Like You Lens MediaOkay, after a couple of techier releases in a row let’s have some proper deep as in deeeeeeeep vibes now, and who better to turn to when looking for those than Croatia’s Lens Media?

Milan-based producer Jonny Bee serves up the very fine original, a warm, luxuriant and musical midtempo number with the very lightest hints of soul and jazz, while a very respectable remix line-up – South Africa’s Pozzi, the UK’s City Soul Project and Hungary’s Ill Cows – provide just enough variety in the rerubs to ensure you’ll happily sit and listen to all four in a row without needing to drag your weary, sorry, clubbed-out ass off the sofa.

Deeper-than-deep, driftaway late-night vibes of the highest order. Acquire.

Pozzi – Origins

April 24, 2013 in Singles

Pozzi Origins Lens Media Side BSome more artists we were only talking about recently! The other day I was singing the praises of Pozzi’s mix of Linas P’s Massive Deep, now here come the SA crew in their own right, once again on Croatia’s Lens Media.

And yes, it’s another winner. In its Original form, Origins is a fairly driving affair that blends deep and techy sounds nicely, with a great atmospheric breakdown in the middle, while Linas P returns the remix favour and give us a slightly chunkier take on the same. But it’s the dreamier, more late-night mix from Big Al that’s doing it best for me this time out.

Another feather in Lens Media’s increasingly feather-laden cap.

Out: This week

About: This actually comes on Lens Media Side B… not quite sure what the difference from the parent label is but they’ve got their own separate Facebook page and everything.

Linas P – Massive Deep

April 22, 2013 in Singles

Linas P Massive Deep Lens MediaAnother label here that’s fast becoming a TIWWD regular: Croatian imprint Lens Media.

This time out they bring us a track from Lithuania’s Linas P that’s very aptly named – it is indeed both massive and deep! The original’s a  warm-up/afterhours affair with dubby tinges around the edges, while remixes from Pion, Deep Spelle and Helly Larson beef up the beats and drag it onto the floor in techy, deep and vaguely proggy fashion respectively.

It’s the Pozzi Dub that stands out for me, though. This mix heads off in the opposite direction and drops the tempo even further, adding some speaker-challenging bass drops for maximum heads appeal. Think the uncompromising red-eyed minimalism of the very deepest, dubbiest dubstep à la Youngsta or Distance, but rendered in a deep house stylee, and you’ll get the idea.

Awesome headnoddin’ tackle to soothe the most battle-weary soul.
