Portofino Sunrise – Variable Geometry EP

September 12, 2015 in Singles

Portofino Sunrise Variable Geometry EP Ready Mix RecordsSome seriously deep house grooves on this three-track EP from rising Italian producer Portofino Sunrise and Canada’s Ready Mix Records.

Zero Support is up first, a dreamy, midtempo affair built for warm-up or post-club play, with pads a-go-go and, in the pulsing synth chords, a nod to vintage Italo house circa 1988-92. Variable Geometry itself follows, which is a tad more upbeat/floor-friendly but still pretty darned deep n’ sumptuous, while completing the EP is Purple, which really ain’t nothin’ but a chunky late-night groove, topped with occasional soulful  male vocal snips and designed to assist your state-transformation as you slowly melt and become one with the sofa…

Excellent stuff as ever from Ready Mix, and a must-check for those that like it ‘proper deep’.

Out: This week on Beatport, everywhere else from 21 September

Various – Best Of DeepWit Vol 3

May 27, 2015 in Albums

Best of DeepWit Vol 3 DeepWit RecordingsThe more observant among you may have noticed a dearth of DeepWit releases featuring on TIWWD of late. I thought they were on a break; it actually turns out they’d swapped promo systems and my email fell off in transition. Anyway it’s all sorted now… and what better way to catch up than with this third installment in the Danish label’s ‘best of’ comp series?

Even the less observant among you will have noticed I’m a fan of DeepWit’s particular, supremely chilled take on deep house generally, and one look at the talent roster here – which includes the likes of Tony S, Portofino Sunrise, Loz Goddard, Ivan Garci and Angelo Mele – should be enough to tell you that’s unlikely to change with this release. To pick but two cherries from a very fine tree, Demarkus Lewis’s garage-y refix of Agent Libre’s Miles Away would be worth the price of admission on its own, while for dreamy, dubby house vibes you’ll struggle to beat DMP’s Lexion this week.

If deep house from the more laidback end of the spectrum is what you’re looking for, then do yourself a favour and grab a copy of this forthwith.

Various – Soul Deeparture In Summer

August 10, 2014 in Albums

Soul Deeparture In SummerOur second compilation of the evening comes from Italy’s Soul Deeparture… a label that I don’t think have featured on TIWWD before, though label owners DJ Umbi and Submantra certainly have.

As you’d expect, both from the name of the label and from those behind it, compared to the Different Attitudes comp below we’re dealing in a more traditional-style, soul-infused take on deep house with this collection. From the label bosses’ opener Everything Has A Meaning (as remixed by Rishi K) onwards, the emphasis is on sultry, slinky vibes, with highlights for yours truly including the Naked-esque, brass-toting swing of Sweet Thinking (Submantra & Umbi again, feat Francesca on vocals), Pavi’s deep, garage-leaning My Perception Of Music (as remixed by Portofino Sunrise) and the more contemporary-style deepness of Jero Nougues’ Castaway with its cavernous production and downpitched male vocal.

Karmine Rosciano’s sparse, jacking remix of Portofino Sunrise’s Burning Baby with its rave-y stabs, and Submantra & Umbi’s closing Bring Back The Drumz provide some welcome tuffer moments but on the whole, this is a treat for those in search of smoother grooves.

Deephope – Digital Jazz EP

August 3, 2014 in Singles

Deephope Digital Jazz EP Haute MuziqueLast one for today, and we’re ending on a definite high note with a killer slab of deep goodness from Big AL’s boutique label Haute Musique.

Digital Jazz itself is up first, an unsurprisingly jazzual, uber-deep affair that wouldn’t have sounded at all out of place on Boulevard. Portofino Sunrise then supply a remix that takes the track into Balearic/beach house territory… I’m preferring the original personally but you can see PS’s rub getting plenty of love in Ibiza sundown sessions. Home is up next, a slow-building, atmospheric, late-night deep houser coming complete with a trippier, spaced-out refix from Rishi K. And then finally there’s Naked, a twitchier, dubbed-out cut that’s tailormade for afterhours floors and comes accompanied by a self-explanatory Bonus Beats mix.

‘Quality, not quantity’ is HM’s ethos – they’ve released just 13 records in over two years. And it certainly shows here!

Out: This week (on general release, it’s been on Beatport for a couple of weeks)

Jero Nougues – The Traveler EP

April 12, 2014 in Singles

Jero Nougues The Traveler 5 And DimeTwo tracks in a total of five mixes make up this latest EP from Denver-based 5 And Dime Recordings.

Argentina’s Jero Nougues is the man at the controls. His first original, In My Mind, is a laidback deep house groove with a spoken male “let me tell you why you’re here” vocal atop lush, lazy keys. Fellow Argentinian Nacho Riveros’s remix is quite similar, but has slightly tuffer drums and some wibbly synths that’d make this the pick for afterhours play, while Tom Lown’s rub is the deepest and most stripped-back of the three. Nougues’ other original is 2am, again a fairly mellow cut that chugs along nicely accompanied by crowd noise and whooshy synths, while finally the Portofino Sunrise mix of the same is an even more mellow variation on the same theme.

Nice gentle vibes all round, but it’s Tom’s rub of In My Mind that takes the gold for me here.

Spennu – Deep It Right EP

March 15, 2014 in Singles

Spennu Deep It Right EP Haute MusiqueAnother one that’s been on Beatport for a couple of weeks but is only just getting a full release is this two-track, five-mix EP from Spennu, AKA Sezer Uysal.

The title track in its Original form is a classic-style deep house dancefloor groover, with quite busy drums, a fat n’ funky b-line, jaunty piano chords and a sampled, spoken inspirational vocal. Greenfish’s remix is sparser and more stripped-down, while the Kirby remix (my pick of a fine bunch) looks to vintage New Jersey for inspiration. I Could Not, meanwhile, is a more contemporary-style, bassy deep houser which is then given a rather lovely late-night makeover by Portofino Sunrise.

With mixes to suit deep house DJs of a range of micro-persuasions, this is one you’d be a fool not to check. Do you hear me? A fool.

Out: This week (see above)

Big Al – Away

February 16, 2014 in Singles

Big Al Away Nightchild RecordsMellifluous, melodic deep house grooves with an all-star remix cast are the order of the day on this latest offering from Ready Mix boss Big Al Ghandour.

Five mixes to choose from. The Original mix is quite lively compared to most of the remixes, with tech and progressive elements. The Portofino Sunrise Haze Remix has a lusher, deep garage-y feel, Deephope’s rub takes us into more contemporary deep/tech territory, while Spennu’s Faraway Remix is a driftaway gem for weary 5am floors. The pick of a very fine crop to these ears, though, is the dubbed-out, uber-deep take from Miss Disk.

Truth be told, though, you won’t go far wrong whichever mix you plump for.

Out: This week on Beatport, everywhere else from 12 March

Various – nUMusic Vol 2

December 7, 2013 in Singles

numusic vol 2 UM RecordsOnce again it’s the weekend and I find myself with a ton of catching up to do… so gonna keep things brief today.

To which end I’ll simply tell you that this is a new sampler EP from UM Records featuring tracks from Dilby, Submantra, Tim Andresen, Santiago Santamaria, Big AL, Jon Salem and Portofino Sunrise… and if that hasn’t got you salivating already then you’re probably reading the wrong blog, frankly. Dilby’s Starting Over – an unashamed homage to Alexander O’Neal’s Criticize – and the deep n’ dreamy vibes of Santiago Santamaria’s City Groove are particular standouts for yours truly, but you’ll have your own favourites I’m sure…

Variouser and variouser…

December 1, 2013 in Singles

Been absolutely inundated with music this week so here’s just a quick round-up of a few V/A EPs you’d be well advised to check out…

All Night Long Svoque MuziqVarious – All Night Long
We’ll start with this six-artist, six-track sampler from Barcelona’s Svogue Muziq. And a pretty heavyweight line-up it is too, with Carlo Gambino & Al Bradley, Low District, LowLife and Matteo Floris all representing alongside Fabio Carla & Matteo San and Manuel Del Giudice. Expect very fine deep house grooves, often with a techy twist, with Low District’s deep n’ groovy Just Dance the standout for yours truly.

Autumn Air Vol 2 DeepWit RecordingsVarious – Autumn Air Vol 2
Regular readers will know I’m a big fan of Denmark’s DeepWit stable and this latest V/A offering doesn’t disappoint. Focusing on the kind of chilled, uber-deep grooves the label does best, with the emphasis on up-and-coming artists, tracks come from Portofino Sunrise, Adjust, DMP, Reeggo and Mr P, with standouts for me including the stripped n’ saxy late-night garaahge of Reeggo’s Raisin N’ Peach, and DMP’s blissed-out Lexion.

Dive Into Illusion Les Folies DigitalesVarious – Dive Into Illusion EP
A three-artist, three-track sampler here from Zurich’s Les Folies Digitales label. Allgoritmika’s Todo Meu Amor marries crisp tech-house beats with a positively rude bassline and snatches of attitude-y vocal, Space Dive by Frank Fonema is a laidback nu-disco/Balearic funker, and Rino Buttice’s Mere Illusion is a minimal-influenced affair, all delicate stuttering rhythms and synthy atmospherics. It’s only the label’s second-ever release so show some love!

Greenfish – Sundown

November 13, 2013 in Singles

Greenfish Sundown Haute MusiqueIt’s been a long day but just time to tell you before the clock strikes midnight and bloggers turn into pumpkins* about this deep n’ groovy lil’ number from Hungarian producer Kovy Máté (hope I’ve got those accents right), AKA Greenfish.

In its original form, Sundown is a unhurried chugger with plenty of nice fat bass, slightly proggy overtones in places and fragments of disembodied female vocal. “A head-nodding deep house experience” is how the hype sheet describes it, and I wouldn’t argue with that! Over on the B, the Portofino Sunrise Slap Dub Remix brings the vocal to the fore and adds some killer slap bass, taking us on an even deeper, dubbier ride that just pips the original to these ears.

A very solid bet for warm-up play and sofa-surfing sessions.

Out: This week (general release, it’s been out on Beatport for two weeks but I was busy two weeks ago!)

About: This is number 10 from Haute Musique, which is Canadian main man Adel ‘Big AL’ Ghandour’s new label… find ’em on Soundcloud, on Facebook or at their own website.
