Rishi K – Slight Of Sound

December 6, 2015 in Singles

Rishi K Slight Of Sound Elektrik Dreams MusicMoving into deeper house waters, here we have the latest from the one-man San Fran production powerhouse that is Rishi K.

Four mixes to choose from. In its Original form, Slight Of Sound is all crisp beats, fat n’ funky bassline, gently tinkling ivories and cut-up, garage-y vox – a deep house jam in the finest west coast tradition, in fact. Analog Trip’s remix is stripped-back, dubby and small hours-friendly, deepAlexander’s is similarly late-night but brings the vocal to the fore, while Pano Manara takes us into headnoddin’, sofa-surfin’ territory.

Class in a glass all round, so go seek!

Out: This week

Some albums, quickly…

November 30, 2015 in Albums

Time once again tonight to catch up with some album releases from the past couple of weeks that I didn’t quite get around to… all are out now but still fresh!

Various – Ten Years Of Leftroom
Ten Years Of LeftroomHard to believe Matt Tolfrey’s Leftroom label has been in business for an entire decade but such, seemingly, is the case. To mark this landmark, they’re releasing this 10-track collection which takes in old favourites, some new remixes and a clutch of new material as well. Tolfrey himself either provides, collaborates on or remixes a full 50% of ’em, while his partners-in-crime include the likes of Route 94, Audiojack, Kate Simko, Jay Haze and Laura Jones. Together, they serve up a heady cocktail of meaty house and sinuous techno that’s dark, often trippy, and perfectly in keeping with the label’s always forward-looking remit. Oh, and you get a 37-minute mixed version thrown in as well. More info here.

Danny M – Deeper Vol 1
Danny M Deeper Vol 1 New Politics RecordsThe New Politics Records stalwart comes with his debut artist full-length here. If you know the label, you’ll already have a pretty good idea what to expect and sure enough, contemporary-style ‘bass house’ with strong nods to both vintage UK/speed garage and the mid-00s bassline house era is pretty much the order of the day throughout. If you’re not a fan of the style, then it’s fair to say this won’t be the album to change your mind, but if you are then cuts like the dreamy Need You, or the big n’ strutty Rock The Disco with its familiar vocal sample, will more than satisfy. More info here.

Various – Ekletik Beats Vol 004
Eklektik Beats Vol 004 EDM UndergroundAnother label comp here, this one coming from Greece’s unfortunately named EDM Underground, who for those that don’t know them have nothing to do with cake-throwing, pyrotechnics and electotraptrancestep, and everything to do with quality underground house music. Across this 17-track collection you’ll find deep and tech vibes ranging from the laidback and jazzy to the peaktime and stompy, and while some names – BiG AL, Pano Manara, Vincenzo De Robertis, label boss Analog Trip – should be familiar to TIWWD readers, most of it’s been made by relative newcomers – making the high quality standard throughout all the more impressive. More info here.

Various – Jazzy Best Pt 6
Jazzy Best Vol 6 Apparel MusicAnd from a label called EDM that have very little to do with EDM, we move on to a compilation called Jazzy Best that has very little to do with jazz! Okay, there’s a brushed snare here, a mournful sax parp there, I’ll grant you. But a Peterson-esque noodlefest this definitely isn’t; instead expect 20 tracks of the finest underground house music – mostly on a deep dancefloor tip but with one or two techier moments and a few more downtempo excursions – coming from the likes of Echonomist, Sarp Yilmaz, Sek and a raft of lesser-known names. ‘Jazzy’ it may not be, but ‘best’? Not far off, I’d say… More info here.

Various – Krafted Vol 1
Krafted Vol 1 Krafted MusicLastly for tonight’s little round-up but by no means least, we have this first-ever label comp from Krafted Music, which consists of 13 full-length tracks plus a continuous mix by Paul Moore of Soultrak. Ger Gleeson, Danny Satori and Christ Burstein are probably the best-known names that feature but as with the comps above, this isn’t about big names, it’s about quality house tuneage. And on that count these 13 slices of underground deep and tech goodness certainly deliver, with Prudence’s Notice Me and Sean Grainger’s Climax – MONSTER tunes, the pair of ’em – worth the price of admission on their own. More info here.

As ever with these round-up thingummies, sorry to all concerned that each of these albums didn’t get a little more in-depth love but there’s only so many hours in the day!

Kiano & Below Bangkok – Deep Thoughts [Remixed]

November 1, 2015 in Albums

Kiano & Below Bangkok Deep Thoughts Remixed Ready Mix RecordsTracks from the Croatian duo’s 2014 artist album get remixed by a host of respected deep house producers here, with predictably fine results!

It should be pointed out that this isn’t a ‘remix album’ as such, in the sense that they haven’t taken all of the original album’s 16 tracks, and had each one remixed. Rather, these are the other mixes you’d have gotten hold of had you purchased all four singles from the album – namely Love & Happiness (with remixes from Tom Lown and Pano Manara), Rolling (Bourne, Nico Mendez, Cosmic Cowboys), 49 Steps (Tamandua Twist, Savvas) and In The Heat Of The Night (Ilias Katelanos, Distant Relatives JHB). But just look at that line-up. If you’re a lover of proper underground deep house you’ll be salivating already… I can only add that you’re quite right to do so so!

An unmissable selection of sumptuous deep grooves, with cuts for the floor, cuts for the headphones and not a duff mix in sight.

Out: This week (on general release)

Pano Manara – Hommage An Karl

October 17, 2015 in Singles

Paco Manara Hommage An Karl Ready Mix RecordsSome superb deep n’ dreamy house vibes here courtesy of those ever-reliable providers of the same, Canada’s Ready Mix Records.

Three mixes of Hommage An Karl to choose from. In its Original form, it’s an uncompromisingly deep, dubby chugger topped with a strange spoken male vocal that our old friend Google informs me is a quote from Charles Bukowski’s Factotum. Things then get a little more trippy and acidic as the track progresses. The BDTom Remix pulls off the unlikely feat of heading down an even deeper, dubbier path, but they’ve saved the best till last, cos the spacey, late-night Analog Trip Remix, with its added fem vocal snips and head-gone-astray synth squiggles, is an absolute triumph.

Out: This week on Beatport, everywhere else from 29 October.

Kiano & Below Bangkok – Love & Happiness

July 5, 2015 in Singles

Kiano & Below Bangkok Love & Happiness Ready Mix RecordsAaaaand finally for tonight… some deeply chilled house vibes courtesy of Ready Mix Records.

In its Original form, Love & Happiness is a midtempo, almost bordering on slo-mo cut with muted kicks, beautifully atmospheric chords and no burning desire to ‘do’ very much at all. Pano Manara supplies a more floor-friendly refix, with the drums brought a little further forward and a little more action in the keys department, while Tom Lown heads in the opposite direction on his languid Looking For The Sun Dub. Finally, the lazy, trippy, slightly early-Orb-ish Chill Mix will cater for those in search of downtempo satisfactio; it’s also the only mix to feature a vocal, which has some American guy talking about the different meanings of the word ‘love’.

Quality stuff as ever from Ready Mix… and a suitably mellow end to a busy Sunday night’s blogging.

Out: This week (on general release)

Anthony Mea – Landscape

July 3, 2015 in Singles

Anthony Mea Landscape EP Haute Musique

Let’s end tonight with the latest from Anthony Mea, fresh from his D&B excursions on Spring Tube Liquid and back in the deep house groove on BiG AL’s Haute Musique imprint.

In its original form, Landcsapeis a sumptuous, soul-tinged late-nighter with pads that just don’t stop and a looping female “glad it’s taught ya” (?) vocal. Evgeny’s Midnight Dub shouldn’t really need too much explaining, but just in case is a sparser, mellower pass bordering on downtempo territory, while finally Pano Manara’s Tribute Mix is another deeper rub but featuring the vocal this time.

Very classy stuff indeed, but then for Haute Musique that’s pretty much par for the course. Ditto Mr Mea, come to that!

Out: This week on Beatport, everywhere else from 13 July

Various – Miami WMC 2015 Sampler

March 23, 2015 in Singles

Miami WMC 2015 Sampler Ready Mix RecordsFinally for tonight (and speaking of BiG AL – see below), we have this prosaically titled but predictably high-quality sampler from Ready Mix Records.

There are seven tracks in total, and it’s nearly midnight and I’m tired, so I’m not going into each one individually. But the musical gamut runs from Mattik & No Rabbitz’s chunky, bassy This Is House to the twitchy, dubby minimalism of Pano Manara’s Hommage An Karl, via the classic-style left coast deepness of Rishi K’s Loud & Clear and the sumptuous late-night, piano-flecked vibes of Yigit Atilla’s Neverending.

For readers of this blog, this is safely file-able under ‘must check’, nuff said!

Out: Last week

Pano Manara – Tree Of Life EP

March 22, 2015 in Singles

Pano Manara Tree Of Life EP Limitation MusicSome supremely chilled deep house from Romania’s Limitation Music here.

Three tracks make up the EP. Tree Of Life itself is up first, a gentle, dubby groove to soothe and satisfy the battle-weary soul. Analog Trip’s remix adds some shimmering Italo/nu disco-ish synths and vocal fragments while beefing up the beats just slightly, making this mix the obvious choice for dancefloor play, while finally Ouverture sees us back in late-night, headnoddin’ territory, its soothing pads underpinned by a throbbing Chi-town bassline and topped with snatches of spoken female French vocal.

Out: This week

Analog Trip & Pano Manara – Mind Over Matter EP

October 12, 2014 in Singles

Analog Trip Pano Manara Mind Over Matter EP Family GroovesA split EP here on Family Grooves that sees the Croatian label ploughing as deep a furrow as I think I’ve heard from them to date.

Analog Trip is up first with Forget The Past, a nice chunky, stripped-back midtempo groover topped with atmospheric synth washes and snatches of wailing fem vox. Fellow Greek producer Pano Manara then gives us Divine Order, which has a little more of the techy feel you normally expect from FG but is still definitely one for warm-ups or very late floors. Analog Trip’s driving, funk-fuelled deep houser Family Nights follows with some killer 90s-sounding stabs, before Manara’s Groove Street plays us out with rolling drums, insistent piano chords, chopped soulful vox and blink-and-you’ll-miss-’em sax parps.

I generally dig Family Grooves’ output anyway but this is something a bit special.

Out: This week on Beatport, everywhere else from 20 October.
