O.O.R.S – Les Deux Villes EP

October 3, 2015 in Singles

O.O.R.S Les Deux Villes EP Lucky Sun RecordingsJust looked back and it’s been over a year since London’s O.O.R.S featured on this blog, which is way too long when you remember he makes records as good as this one!

Maule is up first, which starts out in the uber-deep n’ throbby zone then builds slowly for two minutes until some gloriously old skool stabby Balearic synths and tinkling ivories come sweeping in. Howard Sessions then supplies a remix which is fairly faithful to the original, but ups the ‘chunky, chuggy’ factor and adds a dramatic breakdown in the middle followed by some harder-edged bass synth action. Completing the package is Mechelen, a slightly funkier, more rolling deep house groover with yet more old skool keys, this time nodding respectfully to first-wave house outta Chicago.

Not picking a fave here – all three tracks are very, very playable indeed.

O.O.R.S – Chords From The Underground EP

July 12, 2014 in Singles

O.O.R.S Chords From The Underground Beats Me MusicLast one for today, and we end on a deeper house note (or should that be chord?) with the latest from the ever-checkable Beats Me Music and equally reliable London producer O.O.R.S.

Saint Clement is up first, a fairly laidback (but still floor-friendly), jazz-tinged affair with some lovely looping, yearnsome female yeahs, brushed snares and filtered descending keyboard runs to die for. Rolled Gold keeps things nice n’ deep but is a few notches more upbeat, building on a simple bass n’ handclaps groove to something reminiscent the kind of deep, jazzy garage that was Nice N Ripe’s forte in their earliest days. Harold Heath does the remix honours on the latter, opting for more of a ‘deep space’ vibe, while finally Music Matter is the one to head for if you’re looking for something a little more strutty, topping its firin’ 4/4s with deranged acid squiggles, old skool Rhodes stabs and (presumably sampled?) disco vox.

Not picking a fave here, the whole EP’s a must-check for anyone who actually understands what the words ‘deep house’ really mean!

O.O.R.S – Callabonna Grove

July 15, 2012 in Singles

O.O.R.S Callabonna Grove Sudup Recordings

Seems like ages since we heard anything from O.O.R.S, AKA Matt Evans… so this reappearance on Sudup Recordings is rather welcome.

Especially since you get four quite different mixes to choose from. The Original is a very deep, moody houser that alternates between passages of frenzied hand percussion and passages that are beat-free. The Dlay Remix adds BIG muted kicks for a proper 5am dark room groover, while Silver City man Julian Sanza injects a little rump-shakin’ funk and some sparkly, head-gone-astray synths. And then finally, Moodymanc concentrates on the percussive elements to produce something that’s altogether sunnier and outdoors-y.

Or to sum it all up: deep, bumpin’ and uncompromisingly underground house music. Welcome back O.O.R.S

About: Sudup Recordings are a new label to me I must admit, but they seem to live mainly on MySpace.
