Doug Gomez DRRTYNEWYORK EP NightChild RecordsA three-track EP here from Rissa Garcia’s New York label NightChild Records.

The tracky Banji Bop is up first, kicking off with no-nonsense kicks and shakers, then adding raw, garage-y keys and female vocal snips. You Stole My Love is a more sumptuous, late-night thang with echoing fem vox (the title, basically) and lingering chords, while finally You’re The Woman That I Love again marries soulful vox (male, this time) to ruff-edged, uncompromising kicks… a 5am afterhours workout for floors that like it a lil’ more soulful.

Tuff, raw house/garage bizniss like only New Yorkers know how… and pretty near essential.

Out: This week

Pozzi – Prime Suspect

April 20, 2014 in Singles

Pozzi Prime Suspect NightChild RecordsSouth African house wizards Pozzi take a trip into the deepest of tech territories on this five-track EP for New York’s NightChild Records.

I’m Trapped In Deep Shit sets the tone, its sparse, Detroitian deep techno grooves overlaid with vinyl crackle. Prime Suspect Dub is up next, a track with the emphasis firmly on the ‘dub’, while Midnight Drips is languid, minimalist fare; Ocean Voices is then a near-ambient, downtempo cut before finally Detroit Madness reprises the same kinda mood as the opener.

Five fine, head-friendly cuts best served on a sofa accompanied by your herbal cigarette of choice. I expect.

Out: This week on Beatport, everywhere else from 16 May.

Big Al – Away

February 16, 2014 in Singles

Big Al Away Nightchild RecordsMellifluous, melodic deep house grooves with an all-star remix cast are the order of the day on this latest offering from Ready Mix boss Big Al Ghandour.

Five mixes to choose from. The Original mix is quite lively compared to most of the remixes, with tech and progressive elements. The Portofino Sunrise Haze Remix has a lusher, deep garage-y feel, Deephope’s rub takes us into more contemporary deep/tech territory, while Spennu’s Faraway Remix is a driftaway gem for weary 5am floors. The pick of a very fine crop to these ears, though, is the dubbed-out, uber-deep take from Miss Disk.

Truth be told, though, you won’t go far wrong whichever mix you plump for.

Out: This week on Beatport, everywhere else from 12 March

About: This comes not on Ready Mix but on Rissa Garcia’s NYC-based Nightchild Records… find ’em on Soundcloud, on Facebook or at their own website.

Steve Froggatt – Groove With It

January 30, 2014 in Singles

Steve Froggatt Groove With It NightChild Records Some sterling deep house grooves now courtesy of New York’s NightChild Records.

In its Original form, Groove With It is a lush late-night groove that sports the same Anthony White I Can’t Turn You Loose vocal sample that some of you may remember from Baron’s mid-noughties D&B classic At The Drive-In (which used to be something of an iDJ office fave). In this case, it’s paired with a second, spoken “from New York to LA/from London to Paris/you can do it, you can feel it/we can all groove with it” vocal and some simply gorgeous minor-key piano work. Brian ‘Desos’ Løgstrup, himself no stranger to this blog, serves up a remix that heads even deeper, largely dropping the Anthony White vox and stripping things back to just keys, spoken vox and occasional drums, while label boss Rissa Garcia heads in the opposite direction with a far tuffer Dub… albeit when I say ‘tuff’ that’s within a deep house context, not in a Tenaglia/Vasquez drum epic kinda way.

Personally I’m loving all three mixes – proper deep house, and there’s not enough of that around lately!

Out: This week (on general release – it actually went on Beatport during Xmas week but, y’know, it was Xmas week)
