Tony Lionni feat Maria Marcial – Do You Believe EP

April 30, 2014 in Singles

Tony Lionni Do You Believe Madhouse RecordsManc producer Tony Lionni, who lives in Berlin these days, returns to Kerri Chandler’s Madhouse Records for this three-track EP.

The title cut, in its original form, is a mellow, trad-style soulful houser that recalls the likes of Ananda Project or Stephanie Cooke, albeit its sweetly tinkling ivories and even sweeter full vocal from Ms Marcial are accompanied by a ruff-edged Chi-town bassline that gives the track that little extra bite. Francois Dubois, AKA Funk D’Void, gives us a helpfully-titled Francois Dubois AKA Funk D’Void Remix that, with its sparser, techier production and downpitched vocal, is aimed straight at the afterhours floors, while rounding out the package is the instrumental Black Orchid, presented here in Martin Patino Remix form – a considerably pacier affair than …Believe with lively, skippy beats reminiscent of early UKG.

It’s the Funk D’Void mix that takes top honours for me, but all three cuts are quality for sure.

John Stoongard, DJ Vitto, Movie & Calle – All Stars

October 6, 2013 in Singles

John Stoongard DJ Vitto All Stars One To One RecordsA four-track EP here from Italy’s One To One Records.

On the A-side, you’ll find DJ Vitto, Movie & Calle’s Obagin, a serviceable, drummy tech-house chugger coming with a slightly deeper, druggier refix from Ronan Portela that adds snatches of what sounds like (Italian) movie dialogue. But the real reason this is here is John Stoongard’s Los Cambios De Aqua on the flip. Ever wondered what warbling, Ray Manzarek-esque keyboards would sound like married to tuff tech-house beats, then topped with a wailing Turkish/Arabic-sounding female vocal?

Wonder no more. Martin Patino serves up a discofied remix that’s also plenty playable, but it’s the original of Los Cambios… all the way here, just for not really sounding like anything else around.
