Various – Raiders Of The Lost Art EP

February 10, 2015 in Singles

Various Raiders Of The Lost Art EP 22 DigitA fine V/A ep to kick us off tonight, coming courtesy of Newcastle label 22 Digit and featuring ‘overlooked’ remixes from the label’s back catalogue.

Melos & Kyber’s Stroboscopic (as remixed by fellow northeasterner Martijn) is up first, an unhurried deep house groover with mellow sax parps, garage-y organ chords and a looped male “let your mind be free” vocal. Tom Ellis’s With Chance (as remixed by Suade and label co-owner William Welt) follows, a very welcome helping of bubblin’ contemporary acid house. Colin Sales’s Gigadrum (as remixed by Gulivert) is  a quirky, percussive thang with Afro leanings but not in a horribly WOMAD-y kinda way, while finally YokoO’s Blinded (as remixed by, er, YokoO) is a nice deep, soulful female-vocalled affair.

All four tracks here are good, and Blinded is particularly lovely, but it’s With Chance that takes the biscuit for me.

Sasha Kaktus & Fake Mood – Olovo

July 27, 2014 in Singles

Sasha Kaktus & Fake Mood Olovo Deep Site SpaceWe kick off on a (very) deep house tip tonight with this latest from Croatia’s ever-checkable Deep Site Space.

Four mixes of Olovo to choose from. The original’s a dreamy, late-night drifter, with pads that just don’t stop, gorgeously crisp percussion and a fat n’ squelchy bassline. None of the remixes – from Addex Remix, Kiano & Below and Martijn – do anything hugely different, if I’m being honest, but if pushed I’d pick Addex’s stripped-down pass with its added vocal snips as a fave, with a special mention also for Martijn’s because it gets a little bit livelier as it goes on, offering the DJ a route into different pastures.

But truth be told, all four rubs are very, very fine. Go seek!

Martijn – Rhythmatics EP

December 15, 2013 in Singles

Martijn Rhythmatics EP Deep Edition RecordingsAnother very familiar name here, as northeastern lad Martijn serves up a three-track EP on his own Deep Edition Recordings.

I Need A Rhythm is up first, a nicely understated, piano-led groove topped with a single, looping vocal line from Jomanda’s 1988 classic Make My Body Rock. Stutter is a more jacking and, er, stuttery affair with some gorgeously raw piano stabs, and then finally House Moves treads a similar path but has a little more of a boompty-ish swing about it, and comes complete with chopped-up male vocal snips.

Lovers of proper, trad-style house grooves need to check for this asap… I Need A Rhythm especially.

Out: This week on Beatport, everywhere else from 23 December.

Martijn – FYI EP

October 17, 2013 in Singles

Martijn FYI EP Savoir Faire MusiqueMore TIWWD regulars in the house now as northeastern lad Martijn takes some time out from running Deep Edition Recordings to drop some bombs for Scott Harrington’s Savoir Faire Musique.

FYI itself is a lively deep house dancefloor cut with garage-y organs and female “yeahs”, while the UGLH Remix of the same takes us into deeper, more late-night territory. Noc Noc is a good old-fashioned piano romp that remind this ol’ handbagger a little bit of Solution’s Feels So Right, while rounding out the EP is Route To Berlin, a 5am dancefloor groove with acid-y overtones and more of those killer ivories.

In this age of electronic pop groups masquerading as ‘deep house’ (mentioning no names) it’s good to see some people keeping the flag flying for the real deal!

White Kite – So In Love EP

October 7, 2013 in Singles

White Kite So In Love EP Deep EditionOkay, full disclosure: I’ve always had a bit of a soft spot for Duke’s 1994 handbag cheese-fest So In Love With You*. So this latest offering from Deep Edition, which samples the vocal, always had a bit of a head start.

You get three mixes of So In Love itself, plus bonus cut Get Back. In its original form, So In Love takes one line from said vocal, pitches it down and places it atop a midtempo backing driven by shuffling percussion and raw-sounding keys. Label boss Martijn’s remix is pacier, bouncier and more electronic with just a teeny dash of acid, while Michael McLardy’s remix is similar to the original in its sparse feel, just in more driving, less laidback fashion. Get Back, meanwhile, is a raw, jacking cut that comes on like vintage Chi-town at a lower tempo, and sports a male vocal insistently repeating the title.

*Not that me having a soft spot for mid-90s handbag cheese-fests is exactly news

Hausick – Just Wanna Dance

August 24, 2013 in Singles

Hausick Just Wanna Dance Savoir Faire MusiqueAnd speaking of TIWWD’s current fave remixers (see below), here comes another, as Matches comes out to play on the latest from Scott Harrington’s ever-checkable Savoir Faire Musique.

In this instance, though, Matches’ remix for once doesn’t stand out head and shoulders above the rest. Not because it’s not good, just because the Original and Martijn mixes are also very fine… and because, to be honest, there’s not a HUGE amount of difference between the three, with all three aimed fair and square at lovers of raw, stripped-back, garage-leaning vibes. Martijn is the one who strips things back the most with his percussive take, Matches’ take is a little bassier, while the Original with its long synth crescendoes and greater use of the looping male vocal is the most musical…  but there’s a cat’s whisker between them.

If you held a gun to my head and forced me to pick one mix, I’d probably plump for Hausick’s original, but this is quality stuff all round.

Hausick – Am Worthy EP

July 5, 2013 in Singles

Hausick Am Worthy EP Deep EditionAfter the uber-now vibes of Black Loops (below), let’s have some more traditional-style deep house courtesy of Martijn’s ever-checkable Deep Edition Recordings and Tunisian producer Mahdi Machar, AKA Hausick.

Am Worthy itself is a mellow, midtempo beauty that pays homage to first-generation deep house from the Windy City. Better Days is similar in feel, while Her Smile is another gently rolling late-night gem that comes accompanied by a remix from the label boss himself which nudges toward ‘Ibiza chill-out’ territory, fluttering Spanish guitars and all!

Not got huge amounts to say about this one: it’s just classic-style, pad-heavy deep house. But it’s classic-style, pad-heavy deep house done very well…

Various – Deep Edition Vol 1

May 19, 2013 in Albums

Deep Edition Vol 1Another label comp… from another label that’s got ‘deep’ in its very name, and that crops up on TIWWD really quite regularly! So as with the DeepWit album below you should already have a pretty good idea what to expect here.

So again, what can I tell you that you don’t already know? Well, I can tell you that compared to the DeepWit set it’s a little less late night n’ contemplative, a little more beat-driven and floor-oriented. I can tell you that the artists featured include the likes of Hohle, RJ Fletcher, T. Lavonte and Desos, not to mention of course label boss Martijn. I can tell you that the latter does the honours when it comes to the mixed version of the album, though it’s also available with all tracks in their full-length unmixed glory. I can tell you you that Dudley Strangeways and Zade Cross supply a couple of goodies that haven’t been out before. I can tell you that Ruben F’s I Can’t Change does a remarkably good impression of the original house anthem Move Your Body.

Or I could simply tell you that, again, this is a sterling compilation from one of TIWWD’s current fave labels.

Out: This week, on Beatport; everywhere else from 27 May.

Martijn – No Way Out

April 28, 2013 in Singles

Martijn No Way Out LeftwingWas just talking about Deep Edition boss Martijn a couple of days ago, saying his mix of Claudio AKA Clod’s Who Do You Love? was surprisingly upbeat and dancefloor-ish compared to his usual output.

Here though he serves up an EP for fledgling UK label Left Wing that sees him back in more familiar uber-deep territory. Not to say that the Original mix of No Way Out wouldn’t move bodies on the right floors – very late in the dedicated deep spots, I’m thinking – but 1am down your local Ritzy’s cattlemarket this certainly is not. Thankfully! As for the Romulus Schwarz remix thereof, or the other two cuts Chasing Chords and Two Tone 101, those see us firmly in ‘sofa and a spliff’ territory. But since when did you ever hear of TIWWD complaining about that?

Serious heads’ tackle as ever from Martijn, then.

Claudio AKA Clod – Who Do You Love?

April 26, 2013 in Singles

Claudio AKA Clod Who Do You Love Savoir Faire MusiqueStarting off an a raw, jackin’ house tip tonight! More raw and jackin’ than we might normally expect from Savoir Faire Musique, but definitely not letting the label’s impeccable quality standards slip.

For the original, think thumping, big-system 4/4s and crisp hi-hats, with some garage-y keys work and chopped female vocal snips bringing the musicality. Lee Walker’s remix adds one of those currently en vogue rave-y b-lines, while Deep Edition boss Martijn surprises with one of the most floor-friendly, least ‘ultra deep and horizontal’ mixes I’ve ever heard from the lad, albeit it’s still the deepest of the three passes here.
