Lee Daines – I’ll Be In The Garage EP

January 29, 2013 in Singles

Lee Daines I'll Be In The Garage EP Unrivaled MusicYou may not know the name Lee Daines… but if you don’t, you certainly should know the name of Pretty Criminals. Well, Mr Daines is one of those Pretty Criminals, in the normal run of things, but here he steps out on his own.

And the clue’s in the title with this one, as Lee serves up two cuts that would’ve sounded right at home in a Tony Humphries set at Zanzibar 20 years back! Maxi‘s the tuffer of the two, driving by no-nonsense ruff-cut percussion, while I’ll Be In The Garage itself is a more sumptuous outing with atmospheric pads and lashings of warm, velvet-y bass. Both, needless to say, are delighting this ageing ‘garage snob’ (I was gonna have a t-shirt made saying that once) no end.

What’s also worth pointing out is that the last thing I had through from Pretty Criminals was an out-and-out techno slab, so it’s good to see Lee’s not forgotten those of us who like it a little more on the slinky side…

Hanri & Lee Daines – Smokin’ Even More Deep EP

October 19, 2012 in Singles

Hanri & Lee Daines Smokin' Even More Deep EP Savoir Faire Musique

Not sure what the “smokin” bit refers to… ahem… but anyway here we have some very fine late-night sofa-surfing deep house bizniss from Scott Harrington’s Savoir Faire Musique.

It’s actually a split affair, not a collaboration, with two mixes of Hanri’s Smokin’ Deep (the original and a Fraser Owen remix) and one of Daines’ Even More Than. And “very fine late-night sofa surfing deep house” is about as much as I’ve got to say about any of ’em, really… but with the emphasis on “very fine”, as is generally the case with SFM!

Now then, anyone seen the Zig-Zags?

Jeremy Breen – Holic Down

April 12, 2012 in Singles

There’s no stopping Scott Harrington’s Savoir Faire Musique at the moment… the man himself recently told me “had FAR too much good music pinged my way so had to sign it!”. Which is encouraging, isn’t it?

This particular piece of good music comes from an Argentinian professional pianist by the not particularly Argentinian-sounding name of Jeremy Breen. In its original form, Holic Down is an uplifting, floaty, dreamy kind of sunrise deep houser with chorused, high-pitched female “Closer… closer… closer” vox. Niceness does, indeed, abound. A deeper refix from Howard Sessions & Al Bradley then drops most of the vox and beefs up the bottom end for the 4am floors, while finally we get a fairly self-explanatory (ie, it sounds all sub-aquatic and is dripping in 303 throb n’ squelch) Whales On Acid Remix from Essex boy Lee ‘Pretty Criminals’ Daines.
All three are of the high quality you’d expect both from SFM and from the heavy-hitting remixers involved, making it hard to pick a favourite, though if pushed really hard and threatened with being beaten around the head with a rolled-up copy of Take A Break magazine, I’d probably have to plump for Lee’s uber-deep late-night groover.
