Tony S – Shame

October 29, 2015 in Singles

Tony S Shame La Pitti RecordsThe good ship TIWWD sails now into straight-up deep house waters with another three-track EP, this one coming from the ever-prolific Tony Stevenson.

Shame itself is a lazy, midtempo-bordering-on-slo-mo affair with the lightest of Afro touches in the percussion and wailed/chanted vox, as well as some fine Jersey-ish chord action. Speak is another quite laidback cut that mixes up dub, middle eastern and garage-y elements to sterling effect, while the package is completed by Liberosis, which rides more uptempo percussion with thobbing bass, cut-up vox and synth stabs that hark back to the earliest days of house.

Three quite different cuts, then – he’s nothing if not versatile, our Tone. Liking all three but if forced to choose I think Speak just has the edge.

Various – Hot Summer Vol 1

August 2, 2015 in Albums

Hot Summer Vol 1 La Pitti RecordsRight then… it’s 10pm on a Sunday night, which means it’s time to take a trip into the deep zone. And whose company to do so in better than Vincenzo De Robertis’ La Pitti Records, over in sunny Italia?

Again, there’s 14 tracks from 14 artists so you’ll excuse me if I don’t do the full track-by-track! In any case, you should know the La Pitti sound by now: smooth, soul- and jazz-tinged (very) deep house grooves are the label’s stock in trade, and that’s basically what you get here. With cuts from TIWWD regulars like Tony S, Phasen, James Benedict and Igor Gonya, plus a bunch of newer names, this definitely isn’t the place to come looking for romping, stomping Saturday night dancefloor thrills. But if you need to soothe your soul with the aural equivalent of a long hot bath, step right on in…

Igor Gonya – Night

June 28, 2015 in Singles

Igor Gonya Night La Pitti RecordsWe end tonight with some typically high-calibre deep house grooves from Italy’s La Pitti Records and Russian producer Igor Gonya.

Night itself is a mellifluous, midpaced affair with spoken “I’ll make a bargain… you take me aboard your rocket ship, and I’ll show you the cave of gold” female vox (sampled from 50s sci-fi b-movie Cat Women Of The Moon, Google’s just informed me) and a blissed-out, late-night vibe overall. Blanket is another late-night gem in which sparse, suprisingly tuff beats sit below pads that just don’t stop and – eventually – lilting pianos and male vocal fragments. And then finally there’s Orange Milk with its treated soulful vocal snippets, delicately fluttering synths and warm, enveloping bass.

Again, not picking a fave with this EP – this is class in a glass all round.

Yigit Atilla – State Of Mind

March 15, 2015 in Singles

Yigit Atilla State Of Mind La Pitti RecordsLast one for tonight, and we’ll sign off back in deep house territory with this predictably fine three-tracker from Yigit Atilla, coming on Vincenzo De Robertis’s La Pitti Records.

State Of Mind itself is up first, an unhurried headnodder with proggy tinges around the edges and some jazz-funk-ish geetar to boot. Echoes, which follows, is a sumptuous, dubby late-night groove wherein warm, luxuriant pads, sub-aquatic FX and heavily reverbed synth notes combine to ease you into a state of bliss, dropping down to a full minute and a half of midsection ambience before being joined in the final two minutes by soothing, spoken male vox. And then, just before you nod off completely, there’s Submantra’s remix of the title track, which – with livelier percussion, a jauntier bassline and handclaps – is by far the most floor-friendly of the three tracks. Still wouldn’t try playing it down your local Oceana, mind…

Very classy stuff, as we’ve come to expect from both producer and label!

Misfa Stereo – Something Is Wrong

February 8, 2015 in Singles

Misfa Stereo Something Is Wrong EP La PittiThe latest here from Vincenzo De Robertis’s La Pitti Records, based in Italy.

It’s a three-track affair. Something Is Wrong is up first, a lovely unhurried, classic-style deep house groove with echo-ing, garage-y vocal micro-snips, a funky-assed bassline, rock solid beats and lounge-y keys. Helder Teixeira’s Soul Remix tones down the drums and adds a sing-song female vocal, vinyl crackle, rich, warm strings and fluttering jazz-funk geetar to create something a lil’ more laidback and mellow, while playing us out is F To Forget, a late-night dancefloor groover par excellence with a surging organ bassline, snatches of spoken vocal and insistent top-end percussion.

Five releases in and La Pitti haven’t disappointed yet… definitely a label that favours quality over quantity and definitely one the true deep house connoisseurs need to be keeping an eye on!

DMP – I Don’t Stop

December 8, 2014 in Singles

D.M.P. I Don't Stop La PittiAfter a deep house-tastic weekend, let’s kick off the week on a deep techno tip tonight, starting with this very fine three-tracker from Vincenzo De Robertis’s La Pitti Records.

I Don’t Stop itself is up first, a sonorously deep and dubby affair with snatches of spoken female vocal. Pako S & Genny G supply a remix that starts out even deeper and more stripped-back, but then gradually adds ominous rumbling bass and atmospheric synth FX to create something that’s a little less lilting and a lil’ more dramatic. Cybersys, though, sees us safely back in flotation tank mode.

And flotation tank mode is exactly where ya wanna be with this kind of tackle, so the original of the title track and Cybersys can share top honours.

Tony S – Gotta Have It

July 25, 2014 in Singles

Tony S Gotta Have It La Pitti RecordsSomething of a ‘familiar faces’ theme to tonight’s reviews line-up, starting with this latest from Tony S, who’s featured on this blog many times before. Here, though, he’s doing the do for a brand new label, Italy’s La Pitti Records.

In its Original form, Gotta Have It is a lively, funk-fuelled deep houser with garage-y chopped fem vox and bags of space in the production at the start, adding layers of hand percussion, twittery bird noises and such as it goes on. The dEEPoint Remix tones down the garage-y swing in favor of a more dreamy, heads-down vibe, while bonus cut Solstice Sun is a blissed-out late-night drifter par excellence.

Classy stuff as ever from Mr Stevenson.
