Jelly For The Babies – Chilling By The Khar Lake

September 10, 2015 in Singles

Jelly For The Babies Chilling By The Khar Lake Incepto DeepLet’s finish on a deeper house tip with another very fine two-tracker, this one coming from Russian label Incepto Deep and Serbia’s Jelly For The Babies.

Chilling By The Khar Lake is exactly the kind of tackle we’ve come to expect from both label and artist: smooth, melodic deep house vibes, with a light hint of prog and, in this case, a soulful male “feel the vibe” vocal loop. S’good, but the more interesting concoction is the flipside’s Pu Rabbit From Far Away. Its tempo and overall feel place it in the box marked ‘very deep’, but that description fails to take into account the BIG warping bassline, the rave-y sirens or the fluttering, proggy synths. So just think of it as all that’s good in various shades of house, compressed into six minutes of deep, groovy goodness!

Chris Robin & Jonas Saalbach – Fridge Slap

August 2, 2015 in Singles

Chris Robin & Jonas Saalbach Fridge Slap Submarine VibesFinally for tonight, some very fine, very deep house music from those ever-reliable providers of the same, Submarine Vibes, who are based over in Bosnia & Herzegovina.

Three mixes of Fridge Slap to choose from. The original starts out bordering on slo-mo disco with its clappy beats and cowbell, then drifts off slowly into the late-night chillin’ zone with some lovely chorus’d female “aah-aahs” and high, fluttering synth notes. Hibrid’s remix (NB: nothing to do with veteran prog-breaks outfit Hybrid) is a more ambient-leaning take with a touch of the Northern Exposures about it, while completing the package is a slightly more floor-friendly rub from Jelly For The Babies that brings the 80s sci-fi bassline further to the fore.

The original and JFTB share top honours but as ever from Submarine Vibes this is quality stuff all round.

Jelly For The Babies & MockBeat – Stuck In A Loop EP

July 5, 2015 in Singles

Jelly For The Babies & MockBeat Stuck In A Loop EP Submarine VibesMore very fine deep grooves on this latest from Bosnia’s ever-excellent Submarine Vibes.

In its Original form, Stuck In A Loop is a midpaced deep house groover with a funky-assed bassline, a nagging, almost proggy synth riff and a downpitched spoken male vocal (“they say times have changed, and I haven’t, but that’s not true”). The man like Rishi K then supplies a more stripped-back, slightly more ‘up’ refix that largely dispenses with the proggier overtones, while the Viel Remix takes us more clearly into the late-night, post-club zone.

Whichever mix you plump for, this is the kind of tackle that’ll serve your dancefloor jiggin’ and sofa-based headnoddin’ needs equally well… and with Rishi’s rub edging towards the former and Viel’s towards the latter, you can’t really go wrong.

Various – From The Bottom Of The Ocean Up To The Moon

December 17, 2014 in Albums

From The Bottom Of The Ocean Submarine VibesLast one for tonight, and the last ‘catch-up’ review before, tomorrow, we’ll finally crack on with THIS week’s releases.

So, what we have here is a 12-track compilation from Submarine Vibes, a fledgling label collective based in Sarajevo, Bosnia. Whether you’ll have heard of many of the artists involved is in doubt – certainly Ill Cows and Jelly For The Babies are the only names to have cropped up on TIWWD previously – but the quality of the music isn’t. Deep and tech house vibes are the general order of the day, with a couple of excursions into straight-up techno and more downtempo pastures, and while Carlos Francisco’s Jericoara with its layered percussion, understated bass wobbles and mission control dialogue samples is a clear stand-out, the calibre generally is impressively high for such a young imprint.

Out: Last week (but only on Friday so we’re not too far behind!)

About: Apart from this compilation, Submarine Vibes have put out just nine releases to date. Get the full skinny from their Soundcloud and Facebook pages or at their own website.

Various – Deeper Shades 05

July 28, 2013 in Albums

Deeper Shades 05 Spring TubeWell, it’s been another crazy week – going away for two days didn’t help – and yet again I’ve managed to not cover half the stuff I wanted to tell you about! So gonna try and rattle though a few things quickly today…

…starting with this latest in Spring Tube’s Deeper Shades compilation series. This being Volume 5, you should have some idea what to expect by now, but for the newcomers, deep house grooves ranging from the dancefloor-oriented to the late-night and sofa-bound are the general order of the day, with the emphasis just slightly on the latter. It’s a slightly unusual format this time around, with five artists – Jelly For The Babies, Soulmelt, Dynamic Illusion pres Daniel Cleaver, White Resonance and Sebb Aston – providing two tracks apiece, but the quality standard is easily up there with previous installments.

Soulmelt’s dreamsome Farside and Sebb Aston’s nu-disco-leaning Next To You (which wouldn’t sound out of place on Sleazy Deep) are personal highlights, but to coin a phrase it’s all… well, you know what it’s all.
