Moe Turk – Jam

July 19, 2015 in Singles

Moe Turk Jam Ready Mix RecordsPredictably classy deep house grooves on this latest from BiG AL’s Ready Mix Records.

In its Original form, Jam is a hypnotic, laidback throbber, with jazzy keys in places and a man’s voice saying “jam” periodically throughout. The Jarquin & Cano Remix opts for more floor-friendly percussion and a rolling bassline, and has less of the atmospherics, while the Spennu Remix is again more stripped back, but takes us into late-night territory where those jazzy, garage-y keys really shine through.

If you held a gun to my head I think Spennu’s rub just nudges it for me… but it’s a close-run thing and, to be honest, I’d really rather you didn’t.

Out: This week (on general release)

Rishi K – Transcending/Connect Within

February 28, 2015 in Singles

Rishi K Transcending Nite GroovesPredictably top-drawer deep house bizniss from our man Rishi here!

Transcending is up first, a pretty lively affair by today’s standards that feels a little like classic west coast deep house given a more bass-y contemporary overhaul. You then get three mixes of Connect Within to choose from. The original is a dreamy, throbbing number with a looped spoken “breathe in… breathe out” male vocal. Jarquin & Cano smoothe things out a little on a refix that rides a chunkier bottom end, while Sebb Aston adds some female “mm-mm-mmms” and takes us into more stripped-back, (Jersey) garage-leaning territory.

Not picking a fave here because frankly this is a superb EP all round.

Various – Spring Moods Vol 3

April 16, 2014 in Singles

DeepWit Spring Moods 3Another label who can pretty much always be relied on to come up with the deep house goods are Denmark’s DeepWit. Here, they bring us the third in what’s now their annual series of spring samplers.

It’s a pretty varied affair, as well. Dee C’rell’s Edif’s Tale kicks things off on a dusty, downtempo tip, before Bourne’s ambient/prog-tinged Feelings Are Weapons moves us into the very deepest of house territory. Distortion Inc’s Thinking Of You is in a similar vein to the Bourne cut but with more floor-friendly beats, before Jarquin & Cano serve up what for me is the EP’s finest moment, the sultry, afterhours groove that is El Deep. Fellow Dane Tim Andresen then brings the EP to a close with the laidback, late-night vibes of Can You Feel It.

That’s quite a lot of musical ground to cover in a mere five-track EP, but the collected talents gathered here pull it off with aplomb.
