Deepdoon – Smoke And Mirrors EP

February 5, 2016 in Singles

Deepdoon Smoke And Mirrors EP House Trip RecordingsAnother stupidly frantic week for yours truly, so apologies for the lack of reviews! Tonight then, let’s ease back in gently with this two-tracker from northeast UK label House Trip Recordings and Scottish producer Scott Haggarty, AKA Deepdoon.

Just the two tracks to choose from. On the A, The Ticket is the more uptempo of the two, an unhurried but floor-friendly lil’ deep house groover with atmospherics a-gogo, sweeping, shimmering pads and a sampled, spoken vocal about crackheads lifted from the film… actually I won’t say what film cos I don’t want to get anyone into trouble! Over on the B, meanwhile, My Way takes us properly into the late-night n’ dreamy zone, with lingering pads, mournful sax parps, spangly keys and another sampled vocal, though where this one’s from I actually can’t tell you cos I don’t know.

Liking both cuts but it’s My Way that takes the gold.

Out: This week on Beatport, everywhere else from 15 Feb

Danny Deep & Chris Carini – Head Frogs

August 29, 2015 in Singles

Danny Deep & Chris Carini Head Frogs House Trip RecordingsGonna keep things strictly on a house tip tonight, kicking off with this latest offering from Middlesborough label House Trip Recordings.

In its original form, Head Frogs is quite a lively affair with more than a hint of 90s flava to its busy, rolling beats, “give it to me” diva vox and parping sax. Andrew Hosey’s remix rides tuffer, sparser kicks but otherwise heads several notches deeper, while Angelo Draetta’s rub also operates in deeper pastures but with a more soulful feel. Finally, the Dirty Acid Mix will serve the slightly tougher floors well with its pulsing synths, rumbling bass and, yes, squelching 303s.

All good, but Draetta’s rub just nudges it for me, with Mr Hosey only a nose behind.

Out: This week (on general release)

James Benedict – B’s Melody EP

June 18, 2015 in Singles

James Benedict B's Melody House Trip RecordingsWe move into deeper house territory now with this two-track, four-mix EP from James Bendedict.

B’s Melody, in its original form, is a garage-leaning deep houser with skippy beats, chopped-up male vox and whooshy synth/organ sounds. Angel Rize’s NY Mix of the same rides tuffer, more straight-up 4/4s but retains the garage feel via the addition of some raw-sounding piano. The sultry and quite slow-moving W.N Street, on the other hand, is in its original form a bleepier, shape-throwing affair that looks to vintage Chicago deepness for inspiration, while Liam Dunning supplies a slightly tuffer, more upbeat remix that again gets busy with the piano sprinkles.

A strong package, with the Angel Rize rub of B’s Melody my pick of a fine crop.

Out: This week on Traxsource, on general release from 29 June

Jon Sweetname – Feeling Again EP

April 30, 2015 in Singles

Jon Sweetname Feeling Again EP House Trip RecordingsHere we have the first TIWWD appearance in a wee while from Middlesbrough’s House Trip Recordings.

In its original form, Feel Again is an unhurried affair sitting right on the deep/prog cusp, and will suit those who like their house on the arty/abstract/contemplative side. However I’m much more taken by the accompanying Not Even Close Remix by Dee Brown, a more straight-ahead deep house dancefloor jam with old-school piano stabs and even older-school vocal inserts (“it’s time to jack” and that “it’s the point of highest intensity” one).

The other original cut, Feeling ON (their caps), is a fairly chunky but nonetheless atmospheric midtempo number, with what sounds like Neville Chamberlain (!) or someone talking over the top. However, for me it’s again all about the remix as James Benedict takes us on a tripped-out, late-night dubby ride into outer space…

Out: This week on Traxsource, on general release from 11 May

James Benedict – Mellow Annie EP

December 4, 2014 in Singles

James Benedict Mellow Annie EP House Trip RecordingsDeeper house vibes now from Glaswegian producer James Benedict.

Mellow Annie itself, in its original form, is a sparse, slow-building deep houser featuring Jesse Jackson speech samples and vaguely proggy synths. Jon Sweetname’s remix makes more extensive use of the vocal, tones down the synths and beefs up the drums for more of a deep/tech vibe. Time With Me also comes in two mixes: the gorgeous old skool, late-night deepness of the original, and a more drama-laden refix from Liam Dunning for the bigger rooms, complete with soaring synth-strings and energising handclaps.

It’s the original version of Time With Me that stands out, to these ears.

Out: This week on Traxsource, everywhere else from 15 Dec.
