Various – ANRVA003

October 5, 2015 in Albums

ANRVA003 Act Natural RecordsWith nine tracks from as many artists, you can call Bromley’s Act Natural’s latest offering an album or an EP as you see fit. Either way, if you’re a fan of deep, chuggy tech grooves I’d highly recommend you check this one out!

Downwards by !? (yes, they’re called that) gets the ball rolling with its midtempo thumping beats, ominous synth stabs/FX, rumbling bass and male vocal cut-ups, and that pretty much sets the tone for the whole album. If you’re looking for catchy little ditties you’ll be humming all day, this isn’t the album for you. But if stripped-back, eyes-down 3am throbbers are your idea of a good time, then with cuts from F.eht, Dani Rivas and Gaetano C along with a host of less familiar names, you’ll dig this collection for sure.

Various – Best Of Innocent Music Vol 2

September 28, 2015 in Albums

Best Of Innocent Music Vol 2Regular readers will know I’m generally a fan of Innocent Music’s take on deep techno and minimal anyway, but with this second ‘best of’ comp the Slovenian label have excelled themselves.

There are 14 tracks in total, from a mix of names both familiar (Gaetano C, Rodrigo DP, Aney F, White Brothers) and less so – and not a duff cut in sight. Be warned, this album isn’t for the faint-hearted – listening to it in, ahem, an ‘altered’ frame of mind could seriously mess with your head and general sense of well-being! But if cavernous beats, distorted vox, twitchy snares, white noise, industrial FX, dystopian soundscapes and an overall air of brooding menace and paranoia sound like your idea of a good time, then step right on in, because if you like it deep, dark and techy you’re gonna love this…

Gaetano C & Son-Tec – Different

January 18, 2015 in Singles

Gaetano C & Son-Tec Different Antura RecordsWhat can I say except if you like the Aney F and Andres Santana releases below, you’re probably gonna like this two-track, four-mix EP from Gaetano C and Son-Tec, too!

You Different is up first, an uncompromisingly sparse groove in which twitchy top-end percussion vies for your attention with snatches of spoken vocal and seriously hefty mid-paced kicks. Manuel De Lorenzi’s Destino Remix thereof takes us closer to tech-house territory with much livelier drums and a lolloping bassline, without spoiling the moody, broody atmosphere. Abstruction meanwhile is cinematic, dystopic deep techno par excellence, though a much more driving 2Dave Remix is more one for the out-and-out techno heads.

It’s the originals that stand out for me here but the remixes will help take this to a wider range of floors for sure.
