Audio Units, Hamza & Omanu – Space Dust

November 28, 2015 in Singles

Hamza, Audio Units & Omanu Space Dust DeepWit RecordingsMore quality deep house vibes here, coming from those ever-reliable providers of such, Denmark’s DeepWit Recordings.

Four mixes of Space Dust to choose from. The original’s a dreamaway late-night throbber with female vocal snips, rolling drums, warm percussion, space-y synths (of course) and just a hint of Detroit-t synth-strings in the mid-section. First up to to the remix plate is Finest Wear, who gives us a more floor-friendly rub, though you’d still be talking early doors or very late play. Pat Lezizmo also ups the tempo slightly while retaining more of the Original’s ‘lost in space’ feel, while finally Niclas With Attitude comes with a stripped-back, slightly techier pass.

To be honest, thought, the differences between the mixes here are fairly minor – this is a ‘proper’ deep house bomb whichever way you slice it!

Finest Wear – Born For You

June 6, 2015 in Singles

Finest Wear Born For You UM RecordsA two-tracker here from the ever-dependable UM Records.

On the A, Born For You itself is a hypnotic little chugger with a treated, spoken, poetic female vocal, a dubby bassline, crisp beats and insistent shakers. Over on the B, meanwhile, Wait A Minute is just a BPM or two more driving, with reversed synth sweeps and some ace old skool pianos. And both will rock those floors that actually know what deep house is without a doubt!

Not much more to say, really, except that Finest Wear is the artist formerly known as Mr Cenzo, and that I think the latter cut just nudges it for me.

Finest Wear – From The Garden EP

April 25, 2015 in Singles

Finest Wear From The Garden EP Colour And PitchSome cerebral, esoteric house vibes on this four-tracker from Will Sumsuch’s Colour And Pitch imprint.

From The Garden itself is a dreamy, drifty deep houser with a gorgeous Chi-town bass throb at its heart. If It Were Jazz is a laidback, almost slo-mo groove with a spoken, poetic male vocal eulogising jazz (sample line: “If jazz were a poem, the words would be chosen carefully but the pronunciation played with constantly, with sliding vowels and staccato consonants”). That’s followed by In A Dream, a bubblin’ uber-deep smoothie, while finally Thunder plays us out on a more floor-friendly note.

“For fans of Jimpster, Stacey Pullen, Spiritchaser, freshly mown grass and springtime,” reads the hype sheet for this one, and you can sort of see where they’re coming from.

Finest Wear – Shuttering Leaves EP

September 21, 2014 in Singles

Finest Wear Shuttering Leaves EP Colour and PitchA four-track EP here that’s also the fourth release from Will Sumsuch’s Brighton-based Colour and Pitch, “a brand new independent record label specialising in handcrafted electronic music from the heart.”

Shuttering Leaves is up first, a track that will delight anyone who’s been missing that “deep house with poetry on top” vibe that was so big in the mid-00s, albeit this one also sports some rather fine euphoric, Balearic pianos. Bouncy Trees is a more sedate affair that draws heavily on classic deep Jersey garage for inspiration, Over The Mountain sees the deep beats + spoken word recipe return, while closing out the EP is One Chance, a laidback, late-night deep house instrumental.

It’s Bouncy Trees that’s pleasing these ears most but One Chance will certainly have its moments too.

Out: This week on Beatport, everywhere else from 2 October

About: You can find Colour and Pitch on Soundcloud and Facebook.

PS Some confusion over the title of this one, cos the hype sheet calls it the Distant Memories EP. But the cover definitely says Shuttering Leaves, so I’m going with that.
