Lucio Agustin – Buzios EP

May 15, 2016 in Singles

Lucio Agustin Buzios EP dub.sphereThree quality deep tech cuts here from capital-letters-hating German label dub.sphere.

Buzios itself is probably the most floor-friendly of the three, bringing simple 4/4s, a slinky dub bassline and reverberating FX, all topped with a woman’s voice saying either “protection” or “tension” (can’t work out which). Rosario, which follows, is in a similar vein but with glitchy, minimal-leaning sounds while finally Hurlingham tones down the minimal influences and turns up the dubwise stylings.

The latter’s my pick but these are fine head-noddin’ grooves all round.

Maureen & U-Nick – Different Contribution EP

January 9, 2016 in Singles

Maureen & U-Nick Different Contribution EP dub.sphereWe stay in Germany now with a look at a new EP from dub.sphere that’ll suit lovers of tech-house, deep techno and minimal alike.

Just the two tracks to choose from. Different Contribution has a smooth, dubby bass-and-drums backdrop but tops it with twitchy, glitchy micropercussion, then adds a looping, spoken male vocal (“the contribution… different… so different”). Flip it over, and Hablando Loco is a more percussion-led affair, with lolloping beats, surging bass, vocal snips that are cut-up beyond recognition and some interference-like FX.

Whether you like your tech-house on the deeper side, or your minimal on the more floor-friendly side, these two cuts should you down to the ground.

Matteo Krauss – Future Vibe EP

October 31, 2015 in Singles

Matteo Krauss Future Vibe EP dub.sphereMore deep/dub techno goodness here from another German label who excel at that kind of thing, namely Aura Dub’s dub.sphere.

Three tracks to choose from. Hate has several different dialogue samples (including one from Pulp Fiction) trading places back-and-forth atop cavernous 4/4s, a hefty bass rumble, ominous gong sounds and ‘howling wind’ FX. Karma gets deep, down and dirty with a (pleasantly!) surprising amount of funk in its veins for this kind of tackle, while closer Subconscious operates in essentially the same ‘hefty muted kicks and sampled dialogue’ territory as the other two but is just a tiny bit more upbeat.

Liking all three cuts here but Karma takes the gold.

Stephan:us – Something Like This EP

October 15, 2015 in Singles

Stephan:us Something Like This EP dub.sphereThree tracks of deep dub techno/minimal goodness here from Germany label dub.sphere.

Fourth is up first, an unhurried, slo-rollin’ kinda thing with lashings of fat, warm dub bass. The glitchier My Soul To Take leans a little more to the ‘minimal’ side of the equation, though the heavyweight, dubbed-out feel remains, while finally Something Like This itself is a just-slightly pacier cut rocking solid but muted 4/4s, vinyl crackle, fragments of spoken male vocal and lovely lingering deep house pads.

All good, but Fourth takes the gold.

Emanuele Gulmini – Back In A While EP

August 2, 2015 in Singles

Emanuele Gulmini Back In A While EP dub.sphereMore dubbed-out techy goodness here courtesy of German label dub.sphere.

It’s another two-track affair. On the A, Back In A While itself tops a proper dub bassline and muted yet pounding 4/4s with spacey and industrial FX and a distorted male voice saying, I think, “he’s back”. Sick Substance, on the other side, rides a slightly more uptempo, floor-friendly rhythm but is just as deep n’ dubby otherwise, with its layered atmospherics making it a surprisingly ‘busy’ production for a track that doesn’t really, on the surface of it, do very much at all!

Another one that’s strictly for ‘da headz’ but said ‘headz’ will love it, trust.

Less is more…

July 7, 2015 in Singles

Seeing as we’re playing catch-up tonight anyway, and by way of balancing the more commercial sounds of the Illyus & Barrientos release below, here just quickly are some very deep slabs that I didn’t quite get round to last week…

N2Brothers Sphere Dub.sphereN2Brothers – Sphere
We start in minimal/dub techno pastures in the company of Germany’s Dub.sphere Records. Two original cuts, Sphere and The Way, plus remixes from Wally Stryk (Sphere) and Aura Dub (The Way), with the originals firmly in headnoddin’ dubby mode while Stryk dancefloors things up a bit and Aura Dub go through the door marked ‘dark and pounding, but not stupidly so’. The original of the title track stands out for me.

Kazak Keep Deep Down Gert RecordsKazak – Keep Deep Down
A simple two-tracker here from Russia’s Gert Records. On the A, Keep Deep Down itself is a slow-moving deep houser with prog-leaning analogue synths, a rave-y throbbing b-line and a man’s voice intoning the title. Flip it, and Echo Chord – my pick of the two – is an even deeper, dreamier cut, veering towards minimal with a ton of space in the production.

Background Lyric Poem Waldliebe FamilienBackground – Lyric Poem EP
Romania’s ever-checkable Waldliebe Familien come with the deep techno/minimal goodness on this three-tracker from Background. Lyric Poem itself features downpitched, almost SAW-ish vox, muted kicks and industrial FX, Hidden In Pressure is just a tiny bit livelier/housier and finally Controlling Things is a twitchier affair that’ll satisfy the minimal purists, with near-bruk beats and snatches of foreign language spoken vocal. All good, but Hidden In Pressure takes the gold for me.

Simone M Euthanasia EP Innocent MusicSimone M – Euthanasia EP
More East European deep techno/minimal vibes to end on, in this case coming from Slovenia’s Innocent Music. Euthanasia itself operates in similar territory to Background’s Lyric Poem (above), Walk Around ups the tempo slightly and finally Riots plays us out on a similar note.

Cesar Galindo – In Time EP

March 3, 2015 in Singles

Cesar Galindo In Time EP dub.sphereSome quality deep techno vibes to kick off with tonight, coming on Aura Dub’s new(-ish) dub.sphere label.

In Time itself, in its original form, is quite pacey by deep/dub techno standards but utilises a suitably minimalist sound palette of crisp, clipped beats, synth drones and sonorous bass, topped with some barely-there crowd noise in the mid-section and a spoken, sampled “I will try to do something about this” vocal. The Dejvid Remix is a wee bit slower and even more stripped back, making this the mix for headphone listening where the original’s more floor-oriented. You then also get three mixes of Choices: the original with its big, warping rave/jungle-style bassline, the twitchier, more minimal-leaning Aura Dub Remix and the slightly disquieting Reclame Remix with its distorted vocal snatches and layers of white noise.

Dejvid’s rub of the title track and the original of Choices take top honours for me.

Out: This week on Beatport, everywhere else from 30 March.
