Various – Autumn Air Vol 3

October 24, 2014 in Singles

Autumn Air Vol 3 DeepWit RecordingsWe kick off tonight with some very deep house grooves, coming courtesy of those ever-reliable providers of the same, Denmark’s DeepWit Recordings.

Kiano & Below Bangkok open the EP with the aptly named Lounging, a gentle, downtempo affair made to soothe battle-weary souls. Johannes’s I Wanna Move is quite a lively deep houser with some very cool understated organs and garage-y skip in its step, while Perfect World by Amir is late-night sofa surfer par excellence. La Rose drag us back to the dancefloor with Deep Overdose, while the EP ends with Agus Monteverde’s Sap, a soulful deep house groover that wouldn’t sound out of place in a Harley & Muscle set.

It’s all good, to coin a phrase, but Perfect World and I Wanna Move are the killers.

Various – Global Witness

September 21, 2014 in Albums

Global Witness DeepWit RecordingsWe end tonight with a rather special release, because it’s in aid of charity. Established in 1993, Global Witness is a body that “investigates and campaigns to change the system by exposing the economic networks behind conflict, corruption and environmental destruction.” In a nutshell, they campaign for the environment and the protection of wildlife, and against exploitation by global capitalist megacorps.

A worthy cause, I’m sure you’ll agree… and now you’ve got a good reason to help out, as DeepWit Recordings have put together this fine compilation album in Global Witness’s honour, with all label and artist revenues going straight to the charity. Tracks come from (label boss) Alvaro Hylander, Tony S and Santiago Santamaria plus a host of newer names, with chilled-out deep house vibes the general order of the day, albeit with the odd excursion into downtempo territory and with Tony’s Reward System closing the album on a slightly livelier, more floor-friendly note.

So: that’s 10 quality tracks from a quality label, all for less than £8 and you get a nice warm fuzzy feeling from buying it too! What are you waiting for?

About: Never mind the social media, this time you’re just getting the buy link and yes, feel free to take that as a fairly unsubtle hint!

DMP – Natural Mystic

May 16, 2014 in Singles

DMP Natural Mystic DeepWit RecordingsAnd speaking of labels who seldom put a foot wrong, here’s the latest from Copenhagen’s ever-checkable purveyors of deep house goodness, DeepWit Recordings.

Two tracks, in a total of four mixes. Natural Mystic itself is a deep n’ dubby affair with Afro-leaning percussion, pads that don’t stop and vaguely sci-fi-ish synths pulsing away on top. Deep Active Sound then serve up a remix that, with its more straight-up 4/4s, is perhaps more readily suited to dancefloor play, albeit the luxuriant production means it’d serve just as well for late-night listening at home.

Over on the flip, Just Believe again flirts with dub tropes, and comes with huge revererating synth sweeps and snatches of whispered male vocal (as well as some female “heys”), while finally label boss Alvaro Hylander’s remix again rides tuffer drums than the original but loses nothing of the atmospheric, 6am feel.

House music to soothe the soul…

Various – Spring Moods Vol 3

April 16, 2014 in Singles

DeepWit Spring Moods 3Another label who can pretty much always be relied on to come up with the deep house goods are Denmark’s DeepWit. Here, they bring us the third in what’s now their annual series of spring samplers.

It’s a pretty varied affair, as well. Dee C’rell’s Edif’s Tale kicks things off on a dusty, downtempo tip, before Bourne’s ambient/prog-tinged Feelings Are Weapons moves us into the very deepest of house territory. Distortion Inc’s Thinking Of You is in a similar vein to the Bourne cut but with more floor-friendly beats, before Jarquin & Cano serve up what for me is the EP’s finest moment, the sultry, afterhours groove that is El Deep. Fellow Dane Tim Andresen then brings the EP to a close with the laidback, late-night vibes of Can You Feel It.

That’s quite a lot of musical ground to cover in a mere five-track EP, but the collected talents gathered here pull it off with aplomb.

Distant Relatives JHB – Oceanfront

April 2, 2014 in Singles

Distant Relatives JHB Oceanfront DeepWit RecordingsHaving first impressed with a release on Something Different, South African deep house duo Distant Relatives JHB come to Denmark’s DeepWit with this two-track, four-mix EP.

Oceanfront itself, in its original form, is an unhurried, contemplative instrumental piece, albeit said contemplation is underpinned by fairly tuff kicks throughout. Tom Lown’s remix of the same beefs up the drums even more and adds some dramatic synth sweeps and spoken vocal samples, making this the more likely bet for dancefloor play, though we’re still talking weary 5am floors even then. The other original cut, Deepest Love, operates in similar territory but with percussion that tends more to the rhythmic and flowing than the straight-up pounding, if you see what I mean, and sports more sampled speech by way of a vocal, while finally Gareth Billaney’s remix ups the dancefloor ante with insistent rattling percussion and some wibbly-wobbly synth action.

The original of Deepest Love JUST pips it for me but between the four, any DJ playing actual deep house should find something here.

Miss Disk – Nightflowers

February 16, 2014 in Singles

Miss Disk Nightflowers DeepWit RecordingsAnd speaking of Miss Disk (see below), here she comes again with a single of her own for Denmark’s always on-point DeepWit Recordings.

In its original form, Nightflowers is a reasonably upbeat lil’ chugger with the tiniest of female vocal snips sitting atop shuffling beats and nicely understated synths. Ivan Garci’s Remix is stripped-back, moody and a tad slower, and really lets the vocal shine through, while Bucher’s mix is similarly lower-paced but a little more melodically led than the Garci rub.

The Ivan Garci Remix just nudges it for me I think, but again, any of the three mixes should serve your (proper) deep house dancefloor needs admirably.

Agent Libre – Miles Away

January 25, 2014 in Singles

Agent Libre Miles Away DeepWit RecordingsAnother familiar label, more heavy-hitter remixes and more quality deep house vibes here, with the label in question this time being Denmark’s DeepWit Recordings.

Four mixes of Miles Away to choose from. In its original form it’s an unhurried shuffler with a simple lolloping rhythm topped with sumptuous filtered strings, some lovely warm keys and barely-there snatches of female vocal, the overall effect being not unreminiscent of Dave Lee in Akabu mode. Label boss Alvaro Hylander is first up to the remix plate, bringing us a superb 5am pass that’s both stripped right down and just slightly pumped up at the same time. Demarkus Lewis goes for the soulful dancefloor jugular with a rub that brings the vocal to the fore, while lastly Reagan Grey goes in the opposite direction, emphasizing the track’s sweeping, epic qualities.

If pushed I think Demarkus Lewis just edges it but to be honest, all four mixes are pretty damn fine…

Tony S – Enough Remixed.

December 15, 2013 in Singles

Tony S Enough Remixed DeepWit RecordingsFour new mixes on offer of this cut from Tony S, something of a TIWWD regular, which was first out in September.

Taking the new rubs one-by-one, then… the simply titled ReEdit is a laidback, dreamy chugger with the “enough of your lies” female vocal echoing and reverberating throughout. The Key Of Tune Remix is a more musical affair sporting some lush piano and parping brass, while a vocoder’s applied to the vocal in the mid-section to lend the track something of a nu-disco feel. The DMP Remix is a more late-night take in a stripped-back, techy kinda way, and then finally the Nuff Said! Remix is a bassy take with a lil’ more dancefloor energy.

If the names involved don’t sound familiar, that’s probably because what I’ve not mentioned so far is that these are the winners of a public remix competition. And if mixes of this quality can come from Joe Bedroom-Producer, then I think we can all breathe just a little more easily about deep house music’s future…

Variouser and variouser…

December 1, 2013 in Singles

Been absolutely inundated with music this week so here’s just a quick round-up of a few V/A EPs you’d be well advised to check out…

All Night Long Svoque MuziqVarious – All Night Long
We’ll start with this six-artist, six-track sampler from Barcelona’s Svogue Muziq. And a pretty heavyweight line-up it is too, with Carlo Gambino & Al Bradley, Low District, LowLife and Matteo Floris all representing alongside Fabio Carla & Matteo San and Manuel Del Giudice. Expect very fine deep house grooves, often with a techy twist, with Low District’s deep n’ groovy Just Dance the standout for yours truly.

Autumn Air Vol 2 DeepWit RecordingsVarious – Autumn Air Vol 2
Regular readers will know I’m a big fan of Denmark’s DeepWit stable and this latest V/A offering doesn’t disappoint. Focusing on the kind of chilled, uber-deep grooves the label does best, with the emphasis on up-and-coming artists, tracks come from Portofino Sunrise, Adjust, DMP, Reeggo and Mr P, with standouts for me including the stripped n’ saxy late-night garaahge of Reeggo’s Raisin N’ Peach, and DMP’s blissed-out Lexion.

Dive Into Illusion Les Folies DigitalesVarious – Dive Into Illusion EP
A three-artist, three-track sampler here from Zurich’s Les Folies Digitales label. Allgoritmika’s Todo Meu Amor marries crisp tech-house beats with a positively rude bassline and snatches of attitude-y vocal, Space Dive by Frank Fonema is a laidback nu-disco/Balearic funker, and Rino Buttice’s Mere Illusion is a minimal-influenced affair, all delicate stuttering rhythms and synthy atmospherics. It’s only the label’s second-ever release so show some love!

Moti Brothers – Hermit

October 4, 2012 in Singles

Moti Brothers Hermit DeepWit Recordings

I do try, in all honesty and in all seriousness now, NOT to keep filling this blog with the same old labels week in, week out. Don’t want TIWWD to seem like some kind of back-scratching boy’s club or something. To that end, when I come to review stuff I make a point of never looking at the hype sheet or the artwork until I’ve decided what I want to say… that way I don’t know what label stuff’s on and can’t be swayed.

So damn DeepWit Records for being so consistently on-point that there’s not a lot I can do about having to pour praise most profuse on their latest release yet again. Damn Moti Brothers for the gorgeously unhurried, uncluttered deep house groove of Hermit. Damn Jon Silva for the elements of old skool garage AND rave (just listen to those early 90s-sounding stabs) in his slightly skippier refix. And most of all God DAMN Argentina’s Manuel Belgrano for a heads’ delight of a deep, throbbing Overdose Mix that pretty much redefines the word ‘awesome’.

Damn them. Damn them all.
