N.A.N.C.Y – Back Me Up

June 5, 2016 in Singles

N.A.N.C.Y Back Me Up Natural RhythmMore very solid deep/tech fare here courtesy of Romania’s ever-checkable Natural Rhythm.

Two tracks in a total of four mixes to choose from. Back Me Up itself, in its Original form, has a fat warping bassline, crisp tech-house beats and cut-up scatty jazz vox, while the accompanying uncredited Ken Fan Remix tones down the vocal but goes straight for the jugular with tuffer beats and big, throbbing two-note bassline. However, it’s actually Better Late Than Never that I’m feeling the most here. The original veers towards garage territory with its soulful male falsetto vocal and nagging Rhodes (?) chords, while the Deepshakerz Remix takes us into slightly tuffer, 3am territory and has a slightly tribal feel to the drums.

Various – Square Pegs Round Holes: 5 Years Of Snatch!

May 27, 2015 in Albums

Various Square Pegs Round Holes Snatch! And speaking of labels who haven’t graced TIWWD for a while… I do really like Riva Starr’s Snatch! label, and they do send me stuff… it’s just that they never, EVER include a release date. So I can’t review their releases because I have no idea whether what they’ve sent came out two weeks ago or isn’t out for another three months. Luckily, though, they’ve entrusted this ‘best of’ set to the Defected empire (specifically sub-label ITH), who do grasp the basics of promo… so finally Snatch! can get some TIWWD love.

So, Square Pegs Round Holes, then. It’s a two-disc affair, with one disc home to 15 gems from the back catalogue and the other containing 15 previously unreleased and/or forthcoming nuggets, all lovingly blended together by Riva Starr himself. With the promo mixes not trackmarked, it’s hard to tell exactly which track is which, but better-known names involved include Santos, Pirupa, Tuccillo, &ME, Deepshakerz, Sascha Sonido, Kaiserdisco and David Keno, while the music runs the house gamut from deep to tech to acid… with the emphasis on jackin’ party vibes, with nary a slip on the quality front along the way, and with both mixes flowing smoothly from start to finish.

It’s a pity there’s no unmixed version, but still, a finer 2hrs 35mins of non-stop house goodness you’ll be pushed to find this month.

Out: Last week

Kerri Chandler – Bar-A-Thym Remixes

November 29, 2014 in Singles

Kerri Chandler Bar-A-Thym Nite GroovesHard to believe it’s been nearly a full decade since this first came out! But it has… and now it’s back with a host of new mixes.

The trouble with remixes of instrumental tracks, of course, is that the remixer’s tied to the main hook of the original, unlike remixing a vocal track where as long as there’s at least some of the vocal you can do more or less what you want. As a result, it’s harder to do anything dramatically different from the original. Still, Dbow, O&A, Lewis Lastella, Deepshakerz, Asle, Dztea & Basile and Supernova have some pretty decent goes at it here (two goes, in Dzeta & Basile’s case, once with Ivo Toscano along for the ride), with Dzeta & Basile’s smoother Remix and Deepshakerz’s bass house-y 2014 Rework standing out for yours truly.

You could quibble about how ‘necessary’ this was, maybe. But it’s a classic, surefire floor-filler and also I know Kerri of old, so it won’t be me doing the quibbling.
