Various – Gold Compilation 2

December 22, 2013 in Albums

Gold Compilation Vol 2 Share RecordsThere’ve been some great deep sounds coming on Helder Teixeira’s Share Records of late. And if you’ve not been paying attention then this label comp is the perfect opportunity to get yourself up to speed…

With 14 tracks from as many artists, I’m not gonna do the full track-by-track with this one. But suffice to say there’s a mix of names that’ll be familiar to TIWWD readers (Deephope, Antu Coimbra, Ariel M and of course Helder himself) and many that won’t, and that the vibe overall is deep house that’s current-sounding without being too Trendy Wendy Poptart, with Tero’s sparse Minimal Animal and Gari Rodriguez’s fresh-sounding, spaced-out take on Milkshake particularly deserving of your attention.

For maximum effect, play whole in a late-night herbal fug…

Deephope – Low Blow

September 11, 2013 in Singles

Deephope Low Blow Deep Site RecordingsFirst out last year, also on Deep Site Recordings, Low Blow now gets a second run-out with four new mixes from four respected names on the international deep house scene.

Ready Mix Records boss Big Al is first up to the plate with a sumptuous late-night mix with a vaguely New Jersey-ish sound palette, Deep Spelle gives us a stripped-back pass for afterhours floors, Jonny Bee takes us towards epic, proggy territory while finally Prosis’s remix is a sight more funkified, complete with soaring brass stabs.

With mixes to suit a range of times/settings/DJs, then, this is definitely worth checking.

Felipe L – When Night Sounds

August 18, 2013 in Singles

Felipe L When Night Sounds Deep Site RecordingsOkay, last one for today so let’s drop a little deeper…

Four mixes of When Night Sounds to choose from. The original rolls along at a fairly upbeat pace, driven by a funky-assed b-line and topped by some gorgeous multitracked female vox. It’s the remixes that are doing it for me, though. Karmine Rosciano keeps the tempo ‘up’ but tames the pounding drums somewhat, letting the vocal and the added disco synths shine through. Nando Muro drops it down several notches to deliver a more sultry, late-night kinda pass, while the Deephope Remix operates in similar territory, but with reverb applied to the vox and some lovely garage-y pad work.

I think Deephope’s mix just edges it for me, but Nando Muro’s comes a close second and to be fair, Karmine Rosciano’s not far behind either!

Deephope – Vitamins For Love EP

August 6, 2013 in Singles

Deephope Vitamins For Love EP Deep Site RecordingsNext up tonight, we move into deeper house territory with this latest from Croatia’s Deep Site Recordings.

In its original form, Vitamins For Love is a mid-paced instrumental with proggy tinges around the edges, but it’s really the remixes that are doing it best for me, as Big Al takes us on a mellower, more introspective, late-night ride and Helly Larson serves up a slow-builder of a mix that starts out all womb-like then gets more spangly and spaced-out as it goes on. Proper headphones treats, these two.

Bonus cut Sunrise In Summer then drags us back to the dancefloor, albeit again in a warm n’ fuzzy and again slightly proggy kinda way.

Thanos T – Beatnik Euphoria EP

July 9, 2013 in Singles

Thanos T Beatnik Euphoria EP Deep Site RecordingsAfter selfishly giving myself the day off yesterday, it seems appropriate to kick off the week in warm-up mode and concentrate on the deep n’ mellow grooves today. Starting with this very fine deep house slab from Greek producer Thanos T, who’s previously appeared on DeepWit, Dutchie Music and What Happens, to name but three.

It’s a two-track, four-mix affair. In its original form, Beatnik Euphoria itself is a fairly pace-y affair with prog/Balearic leanings, so it’s the deeper and slightly chunkier Deephope Remix that’s floating my boat more. On the B, meanwhile, Turning Point is a proper late-night driftaway beauty, all velvet chords and yearning fragments of female vocal, while Dim.k S. G serves up a remix that’s more percussive and comes equipped with Spanish guitar flourishes, making its ideal home those Ibiza sundown sessions.

Excellent stuff all-round.

Out: Tomorrow (10 July)

Soul Sway – The Grand

June 8, 2013 in Singles

Soul Sway The Grand UM RecordsLastly for tonight, some typically high-calibre deep house vibes from New Zealand’s UM Records.

It’s a three-track, five-mix affair. The title cut, served up only in its original mix form, is a moody little chugger essentially comprising simple midtempo percussions, heavy surging bass and lashings of space-y, trippy FX (oh, and a heavily reverbed “one of those nights” vocal snip). Cosmic Bandit is a slightly more uptempo affair with rolling, terrace-friendly percussion and synth chords that just don’t stop, and comes accompanied by an even more uplifting, Balearic-sounding rerub from my boy Daniel Kneubühler, AKA Acryl Music boss Da Funk. Finally, MMX is a sparse, percussive workout with lots of aquatic sounds, and a little too percussive for me, truth be told… but that’s okay because Deephope’s lush, late-night remix of the same then turns out to be my pick of the whole EP.

Overall, a very checkable EP with tracks to suit a range of styles… and set-times.

Deephope – In The Bed EP

April 27, 2013 in Singles

Deephope In The Bed EP Unrivaled MusicSomething for lovers of deep house of many different shades on this three-track EP from Unrivaled Music.

The instrumental In The Bed itself, with its Balearic-y kinda feel, will suit those who like it hypnotic and a little bit proggy around the edges. If it’s that very current, cool deep/tech house sound in the east London/Berlin vein you’re after, then head for I Wanna Be With You, which comes complete with slightly indie-ish vox. My pick, though, would be Fast Food – a more funked-up affair with some killer garage-y organ sounds.

Still, horses for courses as they say and with tracks to suit a range of tastes, this is well worth checking.

About: Unrivaled is, as you know, part of the Endemic stable. And Deephope is from Spain, just so’s ya know.
