Saison – Come With Us EP

June 25, 2016 in Singles

Saison Come With Us EP Large MusicAn excellent three-track EP here from Chicago veterans Large Music. And while the name Saison will be new to most, the guys themselves are no newbies either… it’s a team-up between Leigh Darlow of The Layabouts, and Matthew Bandy of Deep House Souldiers*.

So, on to the music. Come With Us, which gets the ball rolling, is a languid deep house groover with jazzy piano chords, snatches of spoken female vocal that recall Akabu’s Ride The Storm and a main nagging Rhodes riff. Help Me is in a similar vein but with a more garage-y feel, while Walking The Night flips the script and takes us to the proggier, dreamier end of deep house, albeit still with a soulful vocal element.

Quality stuff all round, but it’s probably no surprise that Help Me is my fave.

Out: Tomorrow (26 June)

Klartraum – E Remixes Pt 2

June 14, 2016 in Singles

Klartraum E Remixes Pt 2 LucidflowIn the ‘blue corner’ of tonight’s techno twosome we have this remix EP from the mighty Klartraum, AKA Helmut Erbritsch and Nadja Lind. Released in 2014, Klartraum’s E album was released as a series of four EPs, and now they’re taking a similar approach with the obligatory remix ‘album’, with this the second set of rerubs to hit the street.

There are five tracks in total. Our old friend Rishi K is up first with his take on Sky Fall, a laidback deep house groover built with warm-ups and poolside loungin’ in mind. Lucien Foort’s Mayhem Modular Remix of Dark Space Night is an unhurried techno throbber with gnarly sawtooth bass and a hint of acid, while Jon Donson’s rub of Drama Queen , with its 2001: A Space Odyssey samples, takes us into twitchy, minimal territory.  The Vynyard Dub Mix of Flight To Berlin is sparse dub techno taken to the Nth degree, bordering on flotation tank territory with its crackling white noise and mournful trumpet, while finally Nadja and Helmut give us their own Cinematic Mix of Sky Fall, which here becomes an ever-evolving 10-minute feast of lolloping, understated drums, squelchy organic bass, tinkling ivories and synth atmospherics a-gogo.

All good, but Rishi takes the gold for me.

About: This comes as ever on Klartaum’s own Lucidflow label, who you can find (as ever!) on Soundcloud, on Facebook or at their own website.

Leciscu – Jazz-O-Matic EP

June 12, 2016 in Singles

Leciscu Jazz-O-Matic EP House Cookin' RecordsThree quite different mixes on offer of this latest from Romania’s Leciscu, who’s appeared previously on such labels as Gents & Dandy’s and Kolour Recordings.

In its Original form, Jazz-O-Matic features tuff-but-muted kicks, warping organ/synth drones, scatty vocal snips, all topped with some luvverly tinkling jazz ivories. The Melodymann Redeep Remix is a more bumpin’, garage-y pass sporting organ parps and stutterin’ beats, while finally the Khillaudio Remix heads into far deeper waters with lingering piano chords, a fat-ass bassline, dreamy sax and “jazz! Charlie Parker…” vocal snips which househeads of a certain age may also remember being used on Tingo Tango’s It Is Jazz from 1990, though I couldn’t tell you the original source.

The two rerubs just edge it over the original for me, but I couldn’t pick between the two and TBH all three mixes are very fine!

Soul Perpetuity – Origins Of House

June 12, 2016 in Singles

Soul Perpetuity Origins Of House Plastik PeopleThis was always down to get reviewed but in the light of today’s tragic events in Orlando it couldn’t be much more apt right now.

On Origins Of House itself, a spoken vocal reminds us of the emergence of modern dance music in “a club called the Paradise Garage” atop a backing consisting mostly of simple, shufflin’ beats, garage-y organ chords and mournful, jazzy sax. Flip it over for Good For The Soul, another garage-y cut which features another spoken vocal, this time discussing how “This is a music to uplift your soul, to help you forget the troubles and tribulations of your life”.

Amen to that.

Liam Geddes – Right Path To Pray EP

June 5, 2016 in Singles

Liam Geddes Right Path To Pray EP Music Is LoveLiam Geddes returns to Manchester’s Music Is Love here to serve up four fine deep/tech house cuts.

Pray To Watch is up first, all crisp beats, haunting synth drones and squelchly acid bass. Right Path which follows rocks livelier, no-nonsense drums, shimmering synths/pads, resonating piano chords female vocal snips. So Many Needs is a chunkier house cut with jazzy overtones, while finally Song For New is a dreamier affair with surprisingly fierce kicks underpinning yearnsome female vox and what sounds like a loop of playground noise, though I could be wrong.

All good, but if pushed So Many Needs takes the gold.

Out: Today… or at least that’s what the promo mail-out said, though the Soundcloud page is now saying 16 June so go figure.

Various – Spring Moods Vol 5

May 16, 2016 in Albums

Spring Moods Vol 5 DeepWit RecordingsAlways like to save some of that proper deep goodness for a Sunday night so we’ll close up with this latest in DeepWit’s annual Spring Moods sampler/compilaton series.

Nine tracks on offer, with the emphasis on up-and-coming talent rather than well-known names (though Igor Gonya does make an appearance). Not gonna do the full track-by-track but the dreamy, drifty flotation tank vibes of DJ Ndo-C’s opening Lost Images, with its spoken female psychobabble vocal, pretty much sets the tone for the rest of the album: unhurried, luxuriant late-night deep house grooves are the order of the day generally, though there’s enough variation within that to ensure things don’t get dull. ZaVen’s Bloom has a dubby feel, Hotmode’s Manners sprinkles a little Balearic disco sparkle, while SDJ’s Sky Atlas opts for a slightly more up n’ bouncy approach. Furdak’s 80s-tinged Chasing then closes the album on an ever-so-slightly more uptempo note.

Another essential collection from the Copenhagen crew.

Roby Deep – Road To The Unknown

May 16, 2016 in Singles

Roby Deep Road To The Unknown Submarine VibesAnother European label who always come up with the deeper goods are Bosnia’s Submarine Vibes, and they don’t disappoint with this single from Slovenia’s Roby Deep.

One thing I like about Submarine Vibes is that you never know quite what particular shade of deepness you’re going to get. In the case of Road To The Unknown in its original form, we’re headed off to that place where deep house, prog and chill-out intertwine. The Yarosslav Remix opts for much more obviously danceable beats, but then confuses with a minute-long beatless breakdown, after which a hypnotic, vaguely Underworld-y half-sung/half-spoken male vocal loop joins the party.

The standout for yours truly, though, is the throbbing, dubby Hibrid Remix – sheer late-night driftaway deep house bliss…

Rory Cochrane ft Sanna Hatfield – Focus Pt 1

May 9, 2016 in Singles

Rory Cochrane ft Sanna Hatfield Focus Limitation MusicSome seriously deep house grooves to play us out tonight courtesy of Romania’s excellent Limitation Music.

The original of Focus appeared on the label’s Selection Box 2 compilation; what we have here is the first of two remix EPs. In Dee Mac’s hands, Focus is a delicate n’ dreamy cut with a sweet, soulful “My nerves are starting to get to me… but I’ll try to focus” female vocal from Ms Hatfield* and some luvverly piano chords, while Forteba brings us a dubbier pass with slightly tuffer drums. The Addex Remix treads similar ground to Dee Mac, but with less emphasis on the vocal and more on the warm, resonant bass and lingering pads, while finally the Addex Space Out mix sees the Romanian producer taking us into flotation tank territory.

Addex definitely takes the gold here – I just keep changing my mind which mix he takes it with!

*Quite a Lisa Shaw-ish vocal, actually, which is high praise from this reviewer

Various – 10 Year Compilation Volume 1

May 8, 2016 in Albums

10 Year Compilation Vol 1 SoulsupplementAnother label comp here, as Bruno Browning’s Las Vegas-based Soulsupplement celebrate a whole decade in the game with the first of two 10th birthday ‘best of’ sets.

There are nine tracks on offer and it’s getting late, so you’ll forgive me for not going into each track individually. Suffice to say some well-known names like Vincent Kwok and Corduroy Mavericks feature alongside a host of newcomers and a couple of cuts from Bruno himself, and the overall vibe is heavily inspired by classic left-coast deep house of yore, with bumpin’ basslines and familiar (or reworked) vocals snips in abundance – see, for instance, the aforesaid Mavericks’ Marvin-referencing Bout To Lose My Mind, or Browning’s own Red Light, which nods to The Police’s Roxanne.

If you’re looking for dancefloor-friendly deep house in the classic style, you’ll struggle to find a better collection than this one this week. Roll on Vol 2!

Ariane Blank & Albena Flores – Feel The Light/Uncolored

May 5, 2016 in Singles

Ariane Blank & Albena Flores Feel The Light Shoes Bags & BoysGloriously deep house vibes on this two-tracker from Germany’s ever-checkable Shoes Bags & Boys.

On the A, Feel The Light is an unhurried, dubby affair with rolling beats, resonant piano chords and just a hint of minimal glitch. Flip it over, and Uncolored is a smoother deep house ride built to accompany you on your travels as you drift off into inner space…

Not picking a fave here cos I’m loving both!
