Angelo Draetta & Luigi Egitto – Sun Goes

December 27, 2015 in Singles

Angelo Draetta & Luigi Egitto Sun Goes SP RecordingsMore sweet fem vox (see Andi Rivera, below) on this single-tracker from Essex label SP Recordings.

Sitting somewhere between deep, soulful and ‘beach’ house, Sun Goes is predicated around langorous synth sweeps, soaring sax, gently tinkling chimes and, of course, that gorgeous (but uncredited) sultry, wistful vocal. It all adds up to something with a vaguely ‘sunset in Ibiza in the 90s’ feel… but that’s by no means a bad thing.

Not much more to tell you, really.

Out: This week (on general release)

Mikkelrev – Everytime

November 27, 2015 in Singles

Mikkelrev Everytime Oh! RecordsWhere d’you stand on chipmunk’d vocals? If you can’t stand ’em, you’ll want to skip this one. Personally though I’ll take a woman’s voice at +10 over yet another male one at -10 all day long…

Everytime, then, is a midtempo jam sitting somewhere between nu-disco and beach house, with – yes – a chipmunk’d female vocal and a fat, throbbing bassline, while Dana Bergquist’s remix is a more delicate, lilting affair that tones down the bass and vox but does have a hint of acid squelch towards the end. The other original cut, Nu, is the kind of laidback, Nang-ish nu-disco you really want to be driving round a marina in a convertible to, but works better to these ears in ‘bassier with added vox’ Claus Casper & Jean Philips Kind Of Slow Remix form.

Solid nu-disco vibes all round but it’s the original of the title cut that’s earning it its place here.

Deeligent Soul – Colours Of The Sunset

September 19, 2015 in Singles

Deeligent Soul Colours Of The Sunset Large MusicSome smooth house grooves on this two-tracker from Chicago’s ever-dependable Large Music, which is the work of two Belgian producers called Arnaud and Seb (and that’s the sum total of my knowledge about ’em, I’m afraid).

On the A, Colours Of The Sunset itself is a laidback, lounge-y/beach-y kinda groove with a cool muted synth/organ riff that loops throughout, a nice chunky bottom end and both spoken and sung female vox. But it’s really Up Again on the flip that’s earning this its place here, a male-vocalled, funk-driven affair that’ll appeal to the classic US garage lovers.

Various – Hot Summer Vol 1

August 2, 2015 in Albums

Hot Summer Vol 1 La Pitti RecordsRight then… it’s 10pm on a Sunday night, which means it’s time to take a trip into the deep zone. And whose company to do so in better than Vincenzo De Robertis’ La Pitti Records, over in sunny Italia?

Again, there’s 14 tracks from 14 artists so you’ll excuse me if I don’t do the full track-by-track! In any case, you should know the La Pitti sound by now: smooth, soul- and jazz-tinged (very) deep house grooves are the label’s stock in trade, and that’s basically what you get here. With cuts from TIWWD regulars like Tony S, Phasen, James Benedict and Igor Gonya, plus a bunch of newer names, this definitely isn’t the place to come looking for romping, stomping Saturday night dancefloor thrills. But if you need to soothe your soul with the aural equivalent of a long hot bath, step right on in…

DJ Ermi feat Gracy Lagana – Never Mind

June 25, 2015 in Singles

DJ Ermi feat Gracy Lagana Never Mind Inspires RecordsTwo very different mixes to choose from on this latest from our old friend DJ Ermi over in Italia.

The Original Slow Mix is lazy, laidback, violin-sporting downtempo number… think slo-mo/cosmic disco with slight Indian/middle eastern overtones and you’re somewhere in the ballpark. I’m loving this mix personally – and I’d be loving it even more were I sat watching the sun go down at an Ibiza beach bar – but if you’re more a “strictly repetitive beats”-type guy/gal then have no fear, because on the flip you’ll find a House Mix that’s got something of a DJ Spen/Dennis Ferrer kinda feel.

It was the latter that grabbed yours truly the most on first listen, but the more I hear that slo-mo original the more it wins me over.

Out: This week on Juno Download, Stompy and Google Play (“no Traxsource no Beatport we are really underground!” reads the hype sheet)

About: This comes as ever on Ermi’s own Inspires Records, who you can find on Bandcamp, on Facebook, on Soundcloud or at their own website.

Andy Edit – Way Down

February 4, 2015 in Singles

Andy Edit Way Down Edit RecordsAfter last night’s dark, techy reviews line-up, we kick off in a somewhat lighter mood tonight with this offering from Blackpool’s Edit Records.

Sitting somewhere between nu-disco and ‘beach house’, Way Down is a shimmery, summery number with a female vocal from the west coast Naked/Om school of thought, a nice phat bassline, strings straight outta Philadelphia and some uplifting old skool pianos thrown in for good measure.

Just the one mix, but it’s all you’ll need… except maybe some sunshine to play it in!

Miguel Migs ft Meshell Ndegeocello – What You Do Want

January 22, 2015 in Singles

Miguel Migs What Do You Want Soul HeavenA treat for the soulful heads to kick off with tonight, as the heavyweight team-up of Migs and legendary neo-soul/hiphop/jazz vocalist Meshell Ndegeocello serve up this track culled from Migs’ recent Dim Division album.

In its Original form, What Do You Want is classic Migs-style deep, soulful house, very much along the lines of his many previous collabs with Lisa Shaw and Aya. Migs’ own Salted Vocal beefs up the beats for the dancefloor, adding a nagging old-skool piano riff and some killer space disco stabs for good measure. Rodriguez Jr then supplies a brace of refixes: a Remix that downpitches part of the vocal and adds some heavy, menacing bass growl, and a bleepy, techy, pared-back Dub.

Migs’ Salted Vocal takes the gold for me, though.

Oggie B – People Dancin’/Ragazzi

December 20, 2014 in Singles

Oggie B People Dancin' Fetch RecordsNext on tonight’s whistlestop tour through the many shades of house, 2014-style, we take a trek into more discofied pastures in the company of ‘Kinky’ Roland Faber’s Fetch Records.

On the A, People Dancin’ loops up a “people dancin’ and romancin'” sample I should probably be able to identify but can’t, and places it atop midtempo disco-house beats and some glorious Brass Construction-ish brass parps. Flip it over, and Ragazzi rides tuffer, almost tribal-leaning beats yet nonetheless retains a lazy, laidback ‘beach house’ kinda feel thanks to its meandering sax and spoken Italian vox.

Bordland – Phantom/Know It All

September 27, 2014 in Singles

Bordland Phantom DimentiqueMoving into housier pastures now with this two-tracker from Bristol label Dimentique.

On the A, Phantom is the more obviously floor-oriented of the two cuts, rocking reversed drum sounds, killer garage-y organs and barely-there snatches of soulful male vocal. Flip it over, and Know It All is a laidback, almost beach house-y affair, with fluttering synths that do a passable imitation of birdsong, lovely warm piano chords and floaty female vocal snips.

Classy stuff all round, but Phantom would be my pick for the gold.

Various – Global Witness

September 21, 2014 in Albums

Global Witness DeepWit RecordingsWe end tonight with a rather special release, because it’s in aid of charity. Established in 1993, Global Witness is a body that “investigates and campaigns to change the system by exposing the economic networks behind conflict, corruption and environmental destruction.” In a nutshell, they campaign for the environment and the protection of wildlife, and against exploitation by global capitalist megacorps.

A worthy cause, I’m sure you’ll agree… and now you’ve got a good reason to help out, as DeepWit Recordings have put together this fine compilation album in Global Witness’s honour, with all label and artist revenues going straight to the charity. Tracks come from (label boss) Alvaro Hylander, Tony S and Santiago Santamaria plus a host of newer names, with chilled-out deep house vibes the general order of the day, albeit with the odd excursion into downtempo territory and with Tony’s Reward System closing the album on a slightly livelier, more floor-friendly note.

So: that’s 10 quality tracks from a quality label, all for less than £8 and you get a nice warm fuzzy feeling from buying it too! What are you waiting for?

Out: This week

About: Never mind the social media, this time you’re just getting the buy link and yes, feel free to take that as a fairly unsubtle hint!
