Various – Best Of DeepWit Vol 3

May 27, 2015 in Albums

Best of DeepWit Vol 3 DeepWit RecordingsThe more observant among you may have noticed a dearth of DeepWit releases featuring on TIWWD of late. I thought they were on a break; it actually turns out they’d swapped promo systems and my email fell off in transition. Anyway it’s all sorted now… and what better way to catch up than with this third installment in the Danish label’s ‘best of’ comp series?

Even the less observant among you will have noticed I’m a fan of DeepWit’s particular, supremely chilled take on deep house generally, and one look at the talent roster here – which includes the likes of Tony S, Portofino Sunrise, Loz Goddard, Ivan Garci and Angelo Mele – should be enough to tell you that’s unlikely to change with this release. To pick but two cherries from a very fine tree, Demarkus Lewis’s garage-y refix of Agent Libre’s Miles Away would be worth the price of admission on its own, while for dreamy, dubby house vibes you’ll struggle to beat DMP’s Lexion this week.

If deep house from the more laidback end of the spectrum is what you’re looking for, then do yourself a favour and grab a copy of this forthwith.

Various – Light On Dark EP Vol 3

October 12, 2014 in Singles

Light On Dark EP Vol 3 Schatten RecordsMore very trad-style deep house/garage bizniss now on this four-track V/A ep from Germany’s Schatten Records.

Dabit’s Heads are up first with Movin’ On, a deep Jersey-style jam that augments its wailing diva vox, organs and skippy beats with vocal and brass micro-snatches from Brass Construction’s Latin disco classic Movin’. Marsupials follow with Quokka, another garage-leaning cut but with more of a druggy, afterhours kinda feel. Angelo Mele’s Beat Blow rocks more of those raw-sounding drums, organs and diva wails, while finally DJ Simi’s Additivo ends the EP on a more driving, housier note, with a tumbling, St Germain-ish keyboard riff and snatches of spoken jazzman vox.

Not picking a fave here cos there’s seriously not a weak cut in sight.

Out: This week

About: You can find Schatten Records – who despite being six years old are making their TIWWD debut with this – on Soundcloud and Facebook.

Angelo Mele – My Folder/Soul 90s

May 29, 2013 in Singles

Angelo Mele My Folder Different AttitudesCompleting a hat trick of quality house music from TIWWD’s ‘usual suspects’ labels tonight is this neat little two-tracker from Different Attitudes.

My Folder is a jaunty number with a main riff played on what I think are marimbas, and chopped-up female vocals used in voice-as-instrument fashion. Over on the B, meanwhile, Soul 90s has a similar marimba (?) riff but rides tuffer kicks and uses male vocal snips. And both tracks have ‘summer’ written all over them.

If only we could say the same about the UK weather right now…

Out: This week

About: Different Attitudes is a fairly new label but is brought to you by Jesus Pablo and Wez Saunders, of Something Different and Endemic Digital fame respectively. And you don’t get much more ‘usual TIWWD suspects’ than that… anyway, hit ’em up on Facebook whydon’tcha?
