Wally Stryk – All Night

November 15, 2015 in Singles

Wally Stryk All Night Act Natural RecordsSome very fine deep, techy grooves here courtesy of French producer Wally Stryk and Kent-based label Act Natural Records.

All Night itself opens with intricate percussion, then adds a heavyweight dub bassline, synth FX and a barely-there vocal that slowly reveals itself to be a wonan saying “we’ll be shaking all night”. Miraflores is an uber-deep slow-roller sitting somewhere between deep house, dub techno and minimal, while finally Project, the liveliest cut of the three, is a simple lolloping groove topped with a guy’s voice whispering “the preacher” now and again.

Not picking a favourite here – this is an excellent EP all round, albeit one that’s aimed fair and square at the purists and connoisseurs rather than mass consumption.

Various – ANRVA003

October 5, 2015 in Albums

ANRVA003 Act Natural RecordsWith nine tracks from as many artists, you can call Bromley’s Act Natural’s latest offering an album or an EP as you see fit. Either way, if you’re a fan of deep, chuggy tech grooves I’d highly recommend you check this one out!

Downwards by !? (yes, they’re called that) gets the ball rolling with its midtempo thumping beats, ominous synth stabs/FX, rumbling bass and male vocal cut-ups, and that pretty much sets the tone for the whole album. If you’re looking for catchy little ditties you’ll be humming all day, this isn’t the album for you. But if stripped-back, eyes-down 3am throbbers are your idea of a good time, then with cuts from F.eht, Dani Rivas and Gaetano C along with a host of less familiar names, you’ll dig this collection for sure.

Matt Rich & Flyhigher – Fluido EP

February 6, 2015 in Singles

Matt Rich & Flyhigher Fluido EP Act NaturalSome seriously deep vibes to kick off with tonight, coming courtesy of Kent’s Act Natural Records.

Three tracks to choose from. 0213 is a languid, dubwise cut designed entirely with the nodding of heads in mind. Fluido is a wee bit more dancefloor-oriented with its spoken exhortations to “come on!”, while the slightly busier Nilson continues in a similar vein. But essentially all three operate in very similar territory, to wit: hazy, stoned, late-night grooves that you can file under ‘deep house’, ‘deep techno’ or ‘minimal’ as you see fit.

Definitely a ‘connoisseurs and headz only’ affair, this EP. But if that’s you, you’re gonna love it as much as I do.

The late lounge…

January 11, 2015 in Singles

Just wanted to tell you quickly about a couple of things that, strictly speaking, missed the boat…

Daylomar Here Under EP Act NaturalFirst up, there’s the Here Under EP from Daylomar, which comes on Bromley-based Act Natural Records. The promo for this landed earlier in the week and I stupidly promised a review without checking the release date… then once I’d downloaded the tracks I realised it actually came out in mid-December. So I’m late, but I did promise, and it is rather good, with five tracks of deep, chunky, bass-driven house music with a dubwise slant to see you through the early hours in style…
More info here.

Secondly, I wanted to introduce y’all to Nightcap Records. They’re a young label based in TIWWD’s hometown of Bristol, and main man Henry Badge recently sent me across some Soundcloud links to check out. After I said I was feeling a couple of the tracks in particular, he then very kindly fired WAVs across. Again, these are out already but I should really have made it clearer that stuff needs to be sent ahead of release… plus, y’know, they’re local and you’ve gotta support those in your own backyard! So if contemporary bass house grooves are your thing, do check out Friend Within’s The Label – a sound palette redolent of early jungle, but with house beats – and Philip George’s garage-leaning Wish You Were Here, an M1-tastic nugget which I can best describe by saying if Brummie bassline house circa ten years ago had ever had a ‘deep’ side, it might’ve sounded like this! Check out their website for more info and a free download of the latter track.

Yvo Zanev – Sleep Walker EP

October 12, 2014 in Singles

Yvo Zanev Sleep Walker EP Act Natural RecordsIt’s been something of a techno-tastic week here at TIWWD… gonna rectify that tonight. But before we do, here’s one last slab of deep, dubbed-out techno goodness courtesy of Act Natural Records.

Four tracks make up the EP. Going and Sleep Walker itself are the most dubby and late-night, Moving On the most floor-friendly, Strangers Bite the most twitchy and minimal. But these are extremely subtle distinctions, and generally speaking if it’s unhurried sonorous beats, deep bass, cavernous production and just a hint of red-rimmed, skunked-out paranoia you’re after, all four cuts here will suit your needs nicely!

Daniel Jef – Background

August 26, 2014 in Singles

Daniel Jef Background Act Natural RecordsWe ended last night on a deep, crunchy, minimal kinda note… and we pick up there again tonight with this second offering of the week from Act Natural Records.

Three tracks to choose from on this one. Pilot Sees UFO tops a simple, sparse rhythm with sampled ground-to-air dialogue that I won’t trouble explaining, Background is a notch tuffer and grittier and features some guy talking about the dark side of the moon, while Lackerstoke with its cavernous production, distorted vox and industrial FX is one for fans of deep, moody minimal techno.

Only for the headstrong, as we used to say…

Adam Touch & Yanee – Less Is More

August 25, 2014 in Singles

Adam Touch & Yanee Less Is More Act Natural RecordsOops! Nearly run out of Monday, but just time to tell you before the clock strikes midnight about this latest release from Kent-based label Act Natural Records.

The clue’s in the title with this one, with both tracks here on a very deep, bordering on minimal house tip. Less Is More itself essentially consists of understated rolling drums, augmented by occasional flourishes of what sounds like live double bass and topped with a single chiming piano note that loops throughout, with various other FX, vocal snippets and descending synth trills drifting in and out as the track progresses. And if that wasn’t sparse enough for ya, B-side Enemy And I takes the EP title even more to heart, with a simple kick ‘n’ snare rhythm underpinning more of those densely layered atmos and vocal snips.

Two stripped-down gems that are aimed fair and square at the herbal massive…

Jam’ On – Small Touch EP

April 25, 2014 in Singles

Jam' On Small Touch Act Natural RecordsLastly for tonight, we have this four-tracker from Bromley’s Act Natural Records.

One Step is up first, which isn’t a new form of UK garage that’s popular with amputees (ho ho ho) but instead is a simple little deep techno/tech-house groove, its space-y, dubby production topped simply with a male voice repeating the title occasionally. On & On operates in similar territory, riding a slightly pacier rhythm but having even more of a tripped-out feel, thanks partly to the sampled, spoken female psychobabble vocal. Then we come to the title track and finally Good Feelin’, both of which continue in the same ‘rumbling bass, trippy FX and lashings of reverb’ vein as the first two.

File under ‘dark chuggers to reach for at 5am when it’s all getting a bit weird’.
