COEO – Back In The Days EP

COEO Back In The Days EP Toy TonicsA five-track EP here from Toy Tonics adn the German duo of Florian Vietz and Andreas Höpfl that proves you CAN do disco-inspired house without getting all cheesy about it. Not that that was really ever in doubt round these parts.

Back In The Days itself tops simple, muted 4/4s with sweeping disco strings, a spoken male vocal talking about the birth of house music and spacey synth wobbles. Jugendstil is a more laidback groover with a languid funk b-line and spoken/shouted male vox,  ++++ is the most discofied track on the whole EP with its filters and “Makossa!” shouts, but Humbled comes close, sounding not unlike an early 00s Credence disco-houser on mild downers.

Only Native Riddim, which its more strident 4/4s and a sampled, spoken female (which appears to be from an interview with some soul/R&B diva, though I couldn’t say who) flips the script a little, otherwise this is one strictly for the lovers of deep, druggy disco. But I suspect there may be more than a few of those among the TIWWD readership!
