Various – Future Sound Of Sleaze

November 30, 2013 in Albums

Future Sound Of Sleaze Sleazy DeepNo slackers on the compilation front, Sleazy Deep… this is their fifth. As such, you should probably have a pretty good idea what to expect by now!

But for those that’ve just come in, Sleazy Deep describe their musical remit as “nu disco sleaze, deep house and that G-thing, baby!”. So yeah, expect a bass-heavy, lo-slung blend of nu disco, contemporary-style deep/tech house and plenty of R&B/hiphop-style vox (“that G-thing”). With 19 tracks on offer I’m not gonna go into each and every one, but artists featured include Haze-M, DISTRKT and Moda Soul alongside a host of newer names, and while there are moments where it all gets a bit ‘v-neck T-shirt and sculpted facial hair’ there aren’t too many… with Sans Sommeil’s blissed-out I Am Waiting, Lastraw’s bass-struttin’ hip-houser Rawlling and DISTRKT’s Phenomenal Handclap-esque opener To Know You All among the highlights.

Out: This week on Beatport, not sure about elsewhere…

Various – Boys at SSB Vol 8

November 30, 2013 in Singles

Boys At SBB Vol 8 Shoes, Bags & BoysDeep house from the techier side is the general order of the day on this excellent sampler EP from Shoes, Bags & Boys.

The premise is simple. Take nine back-catalogue tracks from seven (mostly, though not exclusively, female) artists, and get nine (I think all-male?) artists to remix them. As you’d expect with that many cooks stirring the musical pot there’s a fair amount of variety on offer – from, say, the bassy, R&B-vocalled main room deep/tech vibes of Jo Beshcil’s remix of Clara Noemi’s Lost Body, to the eyes-down 6am deepness of John Tejada’s refix of label boss Ariane Blank’s You Don’t Even Know Me (a track that’s been feted on TIWWD before), to the almost ambient, late-night grooves of Mikrohouse.net’s take on Om Phonic’s Yes Please More Please.

But that said, no-one’s steering too far away from the basic ‘deep, techy house’ blueprint, which means this is one sampler EP that works as an album, as well as it does as a collection of DJ tools. Highly recommended for Shoes, Bags & Boys fans, it would also be a great place to start if you’ve yet to discover the Frankfurt-based crew as most of the label’s key artists are represented.

Various – Four To The Floor

November 30, 2013 in Singles

Four To The Floor Acryl MusicNext up tonight is this pleasingly varied four-track V/A deep house EP from Acryl Music.

Lonya & Roi Okev’s February opens proceedings, a deep n’ dreamy number that gets a tad more energetic and prog-tinged as it goes on… in fact round about the 4:30 mark there’s a positively ‘hands in the air’ moment. I’m Your Honeybee by Paul2Paul is a more stripped-back affair, with fat analogue synth sounds squelching their way across a framework of crisp, clean beats, understated keys and uber-chopped, looping vocal snips. Lowell’s One Way To Osaka then takes us on a more meditative late-night journey, with echoes of classic Chi-Town deepness in the sound palette, before finally Anturage & Sergey Silvertone gives us Feel Your Soul, another very deep cut with Balearic overtones.

One Way To Osaka stands out for yours truly but it’s the pick of a VERY fine crop! For lovers of more laidback house vibes this EP is definitely one to check.

Robosonic & Mat.Joe – Macho Game EP

November 30, 2013 in Singles

Robosonic & Mat.Joe Macho Game EP OFF RecordingsAnother simple two-tracker here, this one coming Andre Crom’s ever-checkable OFF Recordings.

It’s actually a split EP, with A-side Macho Madness credited to Robosonic on their own while B-side Got Game is credited to Robosonic & Mat.Joe. The former is a midtempo deep/tech chugger with quirky jazz keyboard trills and two different male vocal samples doing battle, with the “the beat goes on… the honky-tonk man” one being the most insistent. Got Game, meanwhile, is a discofied cut with snatches of hip-hop vocal… which I’m guessing might be J-Dilla seeing as there’s a shout to him on the hype sheet, though frankly I wouldn’t know.

I do know, though, that as forward-leaning dancefloor grooves go, you won’t do much better than these two this week.

Iron Curtis & Leaves pres SMPL – Hello Ada! EP

November 30, 2013 in Singles

Leaves & Iron Curtis pres SMPL Hello Ada Black Key RecordsNew from fledgling Brighton label Black Key Records comes this neat little deep house two-tracker from German duo SMPL, who are known individually as Iron Curtis and Leaves.

In its Original form, Hello Ada! is a midtempo, pad-y shuffler with garage-y overtones, thanks mainly to the chopped-up snippets of heavily treated female vocal and occasional trumpet flourishes. Over on the flip, you’ll find a remix from Youandewan, who takes us into sparse-yet-sumptuous late night territory.

I think the latter rub’s just pipping it for me, but both are eminently checkable.

Kostas G – The Harvest EP

November 29, 2013 in Singles

Kostas G The Harvest EP 6th Sense DeepOver in my real life it’s been a long and exhausting week… hence why things have been a bit slow on the blog. Hoping to rectify that this weekend but right now some serious chilling is required so just the one for ya tonight!

Oxford-based producer Kostas G is the man at the controls, bringing us three tracks of deep house goodness. Tuned In opens proceedings, a mid-paced, tech-tinged affair sporting all manner of squelchy synth sounds and echoing female “yeahs”. Sunset Hill is up next, a more luxuriant and melodic, near-instrumental cut with gently tinkling jazz ivories and sax, and then finally we come to Harvest itself, which rides very similar drums to Sunset Hill with a naggingly catchy b-line and some lovely warm chords/stabs.

Quality headnoddin’ vibes for the true deep house lovers… more, please!

Out: Tomorrow

Jonny Cade – AddVice EP

November 27, 2013 in Singles

Johnny Cade AddVice EP ALiVE RecordingsJonny Cade first got props on this blog two years ago… since then the young UK producer (a southerner but dwelling in God’s own county, I believe) has been making some waves, with releases on Leftroom and 2020Vision among others.

On the evidence of his latest offering, it’s not hard to see why. Lonely is the standout track for me, a melting pot of house, garage and UK bass influences topped with discreet (and I suspect resung?) snippets of the classic Sheila Chandra vocal. But the energetic Wanna Be With  You with its speed garage-y bassline and chopped-up hiphop vox ain’t half bad either, while the techier, druggier Why Not rounds out the EP with some fine Detroitian strings and raw n’ nasty (in a good way) bass.

Definitely a producer to keep an eye on…

About: This comes on Tom Budden’s Southampton-based ALiVE Recordings, who you can find here, here and here. You can also click here to check out a mix Mr Cade did for Defected’s ‘In Their House’ series last year.

Kelman & Lennon – Freakin’ You

November 26, 2013 in Singles

Kelman & Lennon Freakin' You Nightbird MusicWhen I first started this blog one of the best things was that, after years of reviewing house records for iDJ and religiously writing 50 words on each one, I could write as much or as little as I wanted. Latterly, though, reviews on TIWWD have tended to follow a pretty set format/word count. So let’s take it back to the old school tonight cos there’s only one thing I really want to say about this…

BIG FUCK-OFF ORGAN TUNE!

It’s like the 90s happened. Now go and buy it.

Habit To Others – Not Tonight

November 26, 2013 in Singles

Habit To Others Not Tonight Different AttitudesThe latest here from Wez ‘Endemic’ Saunders and Jesus ‘Something Different’ Pablo’s joint venture Different Attitudes.

“People with different attitudes don’t follow trends” is the label’s slogan and seldom has that been so relevant, because Not Tonight truly doesn’t sound like much else around at the moment. There are some garage-y organ sounds in there, sure, and some nostalgic pianos too… but the fairground-ish lead and heavily treated, surprisingly ‘pop’ vocal mark this out as truly distinctive.

HOWEVER, it’s actually Wez’s remix that’s floating my boat more… the deep techno pastures into which he takes the track may be more familiar, but they’re also extremely satisfying, as Not Tonight becomes a thing of sparse 6am beauty.

Cere Alba – Renegade Nightclub EP

November 25, 2013 in Singles

Cere Alba Renegade Nightclub Resonance RecordsMixes to suit a range of tastes on this new EP from young British producer Cere Alba.

You get three mixes of Get You, plus bonus cut I Want Your Body. The former in its Original form is an upbeat house stomper with warping, speed garage-style bass and fragments of at least three different vocals. Remix-wise, Jack Fell Down look back to a sexier, sultrier side of UKG for inspiration while Russ Yallop goes down a more straight-up deep house route. And then rounding out the EP is I Want Your Body, a straight-up bassline warper that would’ve gone down well at Niche back in the day (albeit probably at +8) with a treated vocal informing us that “I don’t your love, I want your body”.

I can seldom resist a big silly warper but on this occasion it’s the deeper refix from JFD that’s taking top honours for me.
